Qualified newcomers immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022 can utilize newly expanded government programs designed to identify people with the right skills and experience to keep the province growing.

The search for the right job opportunity can lead many people to take the exciting step of moving to a new country. Ontario is home to the largest population of newcomers in all of Canada, with over 154,000 people arriving in the province in the previous year alone.

With Ontario’s role as a centre of Canadian industry, many who arrive in Ontario this year will be looking for job opportunities where they can apply their skills and grow a successful career. The provincial government understands the important economic role that newcomers play, and have recently announced an expansion of multiple programs designed to make immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022 a straightforward process for skilled and qualified applicants.

“Newcomers are crucial to growing our economy and building a stronger future for all of us. We’re lowering the barriers they face and have called on our partners in the federal government to double the number of newcomers Ontario can select in 2022. By investing in the future success of this program, we’re not resting until everyone in Ontario who wants to earn a paycheque is able to do so.”

– Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development

Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program

Many people immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022 will do so through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is the official economic immigration program operated in collaboration by the Ontario Provincial Government and the Federal Government of Canada. It allows for the nomination of people with specific in-demand skill and ability for immigration and settlement in Ontario. Through this program, 9,000 newcomers immigrated to Ontario for work and contributed their important skills to the economy in 2021 alone.

The idea behind the program is that it identifies people around the world with the skills Ontario is looking for to drive its industry forward, and allows for Ontario residents to nominate qualified candidates as well. Once settled in Ontario through the ONIP, newcomers can then become eligible for Permanent Resident status. There are several different streams within the OINP such as those designed to help students, recent graduates and skilled workers immigrate to Ontario for work and become successful professionals.

$15 Million To Expand The OINP

The OINP is gearing up to help even more newcomers interested in immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022. The provincial government has announced a $15 million dollar expansion in the OINP over the next 3 years. This increase in funds is designed to expand and improve the program, provide additional protection for users, and help recruit newcomers to fill jobs in four key areas:

  • Healthcare – The health care system has been stretched thin as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With doctors, nurses and healthcare providers facing unprecedented levels of burnout, the Ontario government is looking to recruit skilled workers to join the healthcare system in order to provide continued support for patients.
  • Computer programming – Ontario’s tech industry is currently booming, and is one of the only sectors that did not experience a dip during the pandemic. Computer programmers are needed to help businesses keep up with this rapid pace and remain competitive in their market. Given the educational requirements to become a programmer, the OINP student stream will help connect newcomers seeking an education immigrating to Ontario for work with available jobs in the province.
  • Web development – Websites are no longer seen as a only component of a business’ identity, but a vital part of their plans for growth and success. The pandemic caused businesses of all sizes to fully pivot to digital sales and marketing. Web developers are needed to design and build websites that allow small and medium businesses to connect with clients in an expanded global market.
  • Trucking – Ontario is a transportation hub, shipping billions of dollars worth of goods and products across North America. The provincial government is looking to fill important roles in this sector in order to help keep this vital economic sector moving in response to ongoing supply chain issues.

Practice Your Trade in Ontario

For those considering immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022, learning a trade will open up many career opportunities. Through the Ontario Bridge Training Program, the provincial government aims to help newcomers complete the training programs required to practice their trade within the province of Ontario.

The idea is that these programs act as a “bridge” between the training newcomers complete in their home countries and the requirements needed to continue practicing in Ontario. While there is a fee for these bridge programs that varies from course to course, financial assistance is available through the Ontario Bridging Participant Assistance Program (OBPAP).

Look Beyond The GTA

The Greater Toronto Area is the largest metropolitan area in Canada, and the fourth largest in all of North America. As a major centre of industry, it’s plain to see why 35% of all newcomers in Canada choose to settle in the GTA, that’s over 118,000 people in 2019 alone. There are only so many available job opportunities however, meaning that many qualified people may not be able to find a job in Toronto despite their qualifications due to the sheer number of applicants. Fortunately, Ontario is a massive province with multiple cities and locations beyond the GTA looking for skilled workers.

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is a recently launched program designed to help settle skilled newcomers in various smaller communities in Ontario and across Canada. By matching newcomers with specific skills with various job roles in communities outside the GTA, people can find quality jobs and these communities can fill needed job roles with someone with the right skills and abilities. The Ontario communities currently participating in the program are:

  • North Bay
  • Sudbury
  • Timmins
  • Sault Ste. Marie
  • Thunder Bay

New Year, New Communities, New Opportunities

Ontario is at the heart of the Canadian economy and industry, making it a popular destination for newcomers arriving in the country. Although hit hard by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ontario is posed for a rebound in 2022 and beyond. Through programs like the OINP, newcomers with the right skills and abilities can find good employment opportunities in communities throughout Ontario, not just the big cities. Anyone considering immigrating to Ontario for work in 2022 has the chance to find a good job that will allow them to build a long and successful career while becoming part of a new community.
