Publié le 15 June 2022As part of an expanded program, Ontario is recruiting for skilled international workers for these 4 key sectors and creating new opportunities for qualified workers looking to build their career.
For people looking to immigrate to Ontario for work in 2022, a recent announcement from the provincial government highlights new opportunities. Ontario is recruiting skilled international workers for key sectors of the provincial economy. This provides qualified workers with the opportunity to find employment in Toronto and beyond in multiple communities across the province.
Expanding the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program
Ontario is recruiting skilled international workers through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. This program is designed to help workers with sought after skills and qualifications be nominated for specific employment opportunities in the province of Ontario, and helps foreign workers with skills and training find work in their field of expertise. The provincial government has recently announced a $15 million expansion to the OINP, taking place over the next 3 years.
3 OINP Streams for Skilled Workers
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program has several different streams for prospective candidates. There are 3 that particularly apply to skilled international workers looking to build a professional life in Ontario. Workers applying to all 3 of these streams are required to have a valid profile in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC’s) Express Entry system and have received a Notification of Interest from Ontario in order to be eligible for permanent residence status.
- Human Capital Priorities stream: For people with specific skills, work experience, education and language abilities. In order to apply for this stream
- Skilled Trades stream: For skilled international workers who have experience in specific eligible trade and have previous work experience for employers operating in the province of Ontario.
- French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream: For French-speaking skilled international workers who also have strong English communication abilities.
What Is A Notification Of Interest?
A Notification Of Interest (NOI) is an important port of immigration process for skilled workers looking to immigrate to Ontario. It is an official notice from the provincial government indicating that they are interested in sponsoring someone for work immigration and possible residency. After creating your Express Entry profile through the OINP, it is reviewed by the Ontario government. If you have specific skills and abilities that the provincial government is actively looking for from prospective newcomers, they will send you an NOI which is then used as part of your nomination and application process.
Recruiting for 4 Key Sectors
One of the expressed goals of this additional funding is to allow the program to increase the recruitment of skilled international workers in 4 key sectors which are important to the overall economy of the province. For 2 of these sectors, this is also in response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic which had severe consequences for working professionals in all industries, and continues to do so today.
Recruiting Skilled International Workers For These 4 Key Sectors:
- Healthcare
- Computer programing
- Web development
- Trucking
Healthcare – Canada’s healthcare system has been pushed close to its absolute limit during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Doctors, nurses and all healthcare providers are facing burnout at unprecedented levels after putting forth unimaginable effort over the last two years. Recent surveys have found 1 out of every 3 doctors in certain jurisdictions are considering leaving the profession as a result of burnout, with an additional 46% intending to reduce their clinical hours.
As part of the efforts to lessen the load of healthcare professionals, the Ontario government is actively looking to recruit qualified skilled international workers to join the healthcare workforce. Applicants who meet the requirements will be eligible to Express Entry through the OINP, and can expect to get to work providing quality healthcare to people throughout Ontario.
Computer programming – Ontario’s tech industry is one of the only provincial sectors which did not experience a major dip during the pandemic. In fact, the tech industry appears to be fueling growth in other sectors of the economy, considering the increased reliance on digital technology for businesses to interact with their customers. Toronto-based tech start-ups received over $1.87 billion in funding during the first quarter of 2022 alone, exploring the possibility for rapid growth and expansion within the industry.
Skilled computer programmers are the backbone of Ontario’s tech sector, and major skilled employees will be needed to keep up with this pace of growth. Skilled international workers with specific tech qualifications are eligible for Express Entry under the ONIP, in order to help Ontario-based companies remain competitive in the global tech industry.
Web development – The pandemic has demonstrated that having a robust web presence is a necessity for all kinds of businesses. Regardless of industry or sector, all business owners understand that they must provide their customers with a simple and effective online destination to purchase their products and services. While all types of businesses experience sales decreases during the past two years, many of those unwilling to transition to the online marketplace face nearly insurmountable challenges.
Web developers play a critical role in creating, developing and maintaining the infrastructure that supports the online marketplace. The Canadian ecommerce sector is projected to generate nearly $80 billion in sales in the year 2022 alone, demonstrating how much skilled international workers are needed to maintain the growth of this sector. Without these workers, small and medium businesses will continue to face large difficulties connecting with new and existing customers.
Trucking – The transportation industry in Ontario is a source of economic power in the province, resulting in over $24 billion in revenue during a single calendar year. Ontario is part of the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, a major shipping route for billions of dollars worth of goods arriving in Canadian ports and traveling to the United States.
Truck drivers and transportation professionals are sorely needed, with the world still recovering from supply chain issues as result of the pandemic. Despite the size of the industry, there are estimates that over 18,000 Canadian trucking jobs remained unfulfilled in 2021, many in Ontario. With the recruitment of skilled international workers through OINP, the provincial governments aim to provide trucking and transportation with the qualified workforce needed to meet demand.
