Job Description: Denturist

A Denturist is a healthcare practitioner who designs, manufactures and repairs customized dentures and related dental appliances. A Denturist will meet and inspect a patient to learn of their dental health needs, and create full and partial dentures and dental appliances that will fit their mouth, perform correctly and last for a long period of time. For people dealing with serious dental issues, such as tooth loss and decay, a Denturist will help them return to their normal activities. With proper dentures, they will be able to eat, talk and smile with no difficulty and with plenty of confidence. This is a specialized form of dental healthcare where Denturists typically set up their own practice, and patients are referred by dentists or orthodontists.

5 Requirements To Be A Denturist

  1. An Associate Degree and/or minimum two years of university science education
  2. Graduate from one of Canada’s six colleges of Denturism
  3. Be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Denturism (CAD)
  4. Possess a keen knowledge of the latest denture manufacturing and maintenance techniques
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and bedside manner

What Does A Denturist Do ?

A Denturist will spend much of their time meeting with individual patients to perform an examination and create and insert dentures that meet their unique needs. Thorough examinations are important, as no two sets of teeth are exactly the same, meaning that ill-fitting dentures will quickly be uncomfortable. Denturists will also frequently perform routine maintenance and repairs for existing dentures. Typical duties of a Denturist include:

  • Exam patients to determine their exact denture needs
  • Make impressions of the patient’s teeth, gum and jaws
  • Create custom full and partial dentures and dental prostheses
  • Help patients to insert dentures, and make any adjustments to ensure a correct fit
  • Teach patients proper care and maintenance techniques
  • Perform maintenance and repair on existing dentures
  • Keep detailed records and reports on patients and procedures
  • File insurance claims and perform related administrative tasks

How To Become A Denturist

There are specific educational requirements to be a denturist. Aspiring denturists must earn either an Associate degree or have at least two years of university education with a focus on sciences. They then must successfully graduate from one of the six colleges of denturism in Canada, and be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Denturism (CAD).
