The focus of this position is prioritization and facilitation of RAH including DTCOR, GOR, OSCOR and LH WOR operative bookings and perioperative patient care; collaboration/ coordination of a multidisciplinary team - including licensed and unlicensed members. The AHN will use their operating room and surgical clinical expertise to guide other members of the clinical teams in surgeons’ offices and operating rooms while working closely with surgical and anesthesia leads, surgeons, anesthesiologists, zone operative services operational leadership and the operating room booking office unit manager to facilitate care throughout the RAH OR's. The role may include in the development a zone Operating Room Booking process with key stakeholders. Process implementation, education, admissions, transfers, and surgery booking. The AHN is responsible for the team’s compliance with safety and best practices of care within the ‘specialty unit.’ The AHN acts as a clinical leader for team members and is responsible for the daily coordination of patient care activities in the various surgical services including operating rooms, pre-operative clinic, inpatient surgical units, as well as assigned to overall operative services leadership activities. The AHN is accountable for the resources required for the specialty patient care as well as confirms complete operative case bookings, including time, supplies, and equipment. The AHN will work with the UM for the booking office to assist with optimizing surgical bookings and working with all OR managers and OR AHNs to ensure the bookings are correct for equipment, supplies, time. The AHN will assist the booking office UM to manage given up time. The AHN uses strong critical thinking skills to optimize the use of OR time by coordinating surgeons, resources including but not limited to equipment and supplies.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Bachelors degree in nursing. 5-10 years recent operating room experience with charge nurse experience required. Experience with operating room booking (elective or urgent). Strong communication skills. Ability to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities. Work within a team environment and effectively contribute to planning processes. Proficient understanding of patient and surgical flow processes. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational, and patient care skills. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Connect Care training, excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office - Outlook, Teams, Excel and Word. Demonstrate minimum typing speed 50 words per minute.
