Alberta Health Services has an exciting opportunity for a detail oriented Health Information Management Professional to join our Cancer Research and Analytics team as a Cancer Registrar. The Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR) is a population based registry that records and maintains data on all new cancer cases and cancer deaths occurring in the province and is mandated by the Regional Health Authorities Cancer Registry regulation. Accurate and reliable cancer data is essential for cancer surveillance and research as well as planning and evaluating cancer care programs to improve patient care. The registry is a crucial starting point for many data requests by epidemiologists, statisticians, researchers, and healthcare providers. The Cancer Registrar I (CR I), oncology coder, is responsible to accurately code using national and international coding standards including ICD-O-3 and cancer stage using AJCC TNM 8th and 9th edition to record cancer conditions into the provincial database. The CR I must be self-directed and an effective decision maker in order to follow complex hierarchical coding rules. They will be required to be computer literate to navigate efficiently through multiple programs, data sources, and resources simultaneously in order to collect and interpret detailed cancer data that is high quality, comparable, and timely. Critical thinking, adaptability to change and taking initiative will be key in bringing forward issues proactively and leading opportunities for improvement. The successful CR I may work out of Edmonton’s Seventh Street Plaza or Calgary’s Tom Baker Cancer Centre and would enter an internal minimum one year training program with option to telework once minimum productivity and quality standards are consistently met. Candidates can confirm location options and preferences with the hiring manager during the selection process.

As a Cancer Registrar I, you will be responsible for reviewing legal hybrid health records for the purpose of Oncology coding and staging for the Cancer Registry using the National/International Cancer Registry guidelines. You will also obtain death information of patients, enter data in the Cancer Registry software program and update medical records. Quality Assurance will be maintained through annual and new clean ups, perform audits relating to coding and abstracting on the Cancer Registry file, and actively participate in the quality control program as outlined by the Quality Assurance Committee.

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Minimum 5 years working in a health care environment. Minimum 3 years of health care coding experience, working with patient charts to efficiently interpret and abstract health data, within the last 5 years.
