Alberta Health Services has an employment opportunity for a casual Driver I. Casual drivers provide support to the regular driving base and are responsible for the timely delivery of medical supplies and orders to sites within the Greater Edmonton Region, as well as performing other driving related functions as directed by the Lead Transportation Edmonton and North zone. The transportation of medical supplies is conducted by utilization of cargo vans and single axle 1, 2 and 5 ton trucks. Due to the variance of shifts and hours of work, AHS casual drivers are most likely to succeed if they have flexibility to accept assignments on short notice and/or be able to work several days in a row with some periods on inactivity. This position is located at the Material Distribution Center, Edmonton and is subject to shift work.

As a Driver I, you will transport a range of products including, but not limited to, mail, packages, medical supplies, equipment, food and linen, in accordance with AHS standards, regulations and policies. Working independently, you must adhere to scheduled routes, as well as ad hoc requests, in a safe and courteous manner. You will be expected to perform a series of routine duties such as logging mileage, cleaning vehicles, performing pre and post vehicle inspections and reporting defects and malfunctions to management.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta Operator's Licence. Completion of valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certificate.

Must know commercial vehicle operating regulations, such as trip inspection, hours of service, vehicle weights and dimensions, City of Edmonton Truck routes and TDG regulations. Recent driving and delivery experience and knowledge of City of Edmonton routes and regulations. Must be able to work shift including weekends and major statutory holidays. Must be physically able to use Material Handling Equipment (forklift, motorized pallet jack, hydraulic lift) is desirable. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and make simple mathematical calculations. Must demonstrate a courteous and cooperative attitude when dealing with customers, other AHS staff, and members of the public. Must be mature, stable and able to work within established routines. Must be prepared to submit to a driver assessment check ride and be prepared to answer specific questions related to commercial vehicle operations. Must do heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, of pallets and palletized loads and drive/work in seasonal temperatures and weather conditions.

Note: Physical demands include shift work, amounts of standing, walking, sitting and climbing during workday; bends, stoops, reaches for and carries material.
