Across from the Alberta Children's Hospital, the Child Development Centre is a warm & vibrant workplace with team members providing service to children & their families in a tertiary level outpatient setting. Reporting to the Unit Manager for Child Development Services, the Education Consultant provides a specialized service to assess & clarify educational needs of school-aged children and youth within the Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Clinic, Cumulative Risk Diagnostic Clinic, Consultative Clinics, and Youth Health. As the primary liaison between the interdisciplinary medical teams & educational settings, the Education Consultant collaborates with the child, family, school teams, & clinical teams to support the educational needs of children with complex developmental concerns. As the successful candidate, you will consult with parents, teachers, and interdisciplinary team members regarding a student’s educational needs & the impact of the child’s development on their needs; document & review assessments, observations, school & parent contacts, and other relevant reports; provide recommendations for supports, strategies, or accommodations to support a child’s successful attendance at school; participate in inter-disciplinary team meetings; and act as a resource person for educational issues for students with complex needs to parents & teachers. You will have excellent communication & interpersonal skills, demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment, be organized in managing multiple referrals, be adaptable & open to change in the implementation of new and innovative care, and will have knowledge of the Alberta Education system as it relates to special needs integration and an understanding of the complex health care system.

As an Education Consultant II, you will be working closely with interdisciplinary professionals with a variety of backgrounds, where you will provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of staff development, professional development, patient education and consumer health education programs. By collaborating with key stakeholders, you will identify, prioritize and evaluate professional and clinical needs of staff, assisting staff with effective problem-solving and improving patient care outcomes. This includes the development and delivery of seminars, workshops and other clinical education opportunities within your assigned program.

Bachelor's degree in a health or education related field. Active or eligible for registration with the applicable regulatory college.

Knowledge of typical child development in preschool aged children to adolescents. Knowledge of the implications of children with significant developmental disorders in the classroom. Strong background in assessment methods and special education. Valid Alberta Teacher's Certificate. Teaching experience in regular and/or special education across all grade levels. Knowledge of Assistive Technology and Augmentative Communication strategies and devices. Demonstrated understanding of the development and implementation of Individual Program Plans.
