Electronics Technologist II

Position Summary: This Electronic Tech II position reports to the Manager of Engineering Services, Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) at the University of Alberta Hospitals (UAH). The incumbent will assist in maintaining eight facilities totaling over 650,000 m² of clinical and mechanical space, including Acute Care, Laboratory, Research, Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial equipment. Key Responsibilities: Monitor, maintain, test, repair, commission systems and document results according to the Canadian Electrical Code, Fire Code, Department Policy, Life Safety, Building Code regulations, according to Provincial, Site, and FME standards. Work within a multidisciplinary team of Tradespeople, Maintenance Workers, and collaborate with Clinical Staff, Contractors, and other Stakeholders. Maintain systems, including but not limited to: Building Management Systems; Nurse Call systems; Fire Alarm systems; Automatic Door control systems; Lenel Security System (including cameras); Motorola Radio system, Intercoms, TOA & Aiphone Systems; Key Management Systems; Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs); Instrumentation Equipment; Lighting Systems (Cristal, Douglas, Reliable Controls); Uninterrupted Power Systems; Sterilizing & Medical Processing Equipment; Panic Alarms & Sound Masking systems; Instrument Washers, Gas Detection; Computer software/hardware maintenance; FME Server maintenance and upgrade. Project Involvement: Support Major & Minor Capital Projects, FME projects at UAH, including attending start-up meetings; Reviewing and commissioning specifications & drawings; Coordinating with Consultants, Engineers, Project Managers, Coordinators, and Clinical Liaisons. Expectation: Ensure the integrity of all systems, to operate effectively and provide a safe and comfortable environment for hospital occupants, in compliance with FME and Site standards.

As an Electronics Technologist II, you will perform maintenance and repair duties on a variety of complex non-clinical electronic systems in accordance with manuals, specifications and AHS standards and practices. You will be responsible for complex non-clinical electronic systems and will exercise independence when completing daily responsibilities of the position.

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Certificate in one of the following trades: Electrician, Electronics Technician or Instrument Technician from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training; or completion of a two-year diploma of related technology (Electronic Technologist).

Must hold credentials in Electronics Technician, Instrument Technician, Electrical/Electronic Technologist, or completion of a two-year diploma in a related technology or field from a Canadian accredited institution (International credentials must be IQAS approved). Minimum 5 years’ work experience in one of the following trades or designations: Electronics Technician, Instrument Technician, Electronic Technologist, Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Journeyperson. Minimum 2 years’ experience in an active hospital maintenance program (International credentials must be IQAS approved). CFAA - Canadian Fire Alarm Association certification preferred. Required Knowledge & Skills: Experience with: Fire Alarm & Security System Code, Electrical Code, Alberta Building Code & Safety Regulations, Computers, and Server Support; Familiarity with tools and equipment used in the trade; Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel); Ability to work within a team setting and also independently in an interdisciplinary setting, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize tasks efficiently; Proven reliability with no physical limitations regarding sitting, kneeling, crawling, squatting, standing, walking, working at heights, and carrying heavy loads; Demonstrated self-direction, adaptability, and flexibility in a fast-paced environment; Must meet all organizational policy requirements; Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Requirements: Knowledge in implementing preventive maintenance schedules, prepare feasibility, cost estimates, reports, and ordering supplies; Preference will be given to previous maintenance experience; Must be reliable, cooperative and capable of working independently; Has the ability to work under emergency conditions and in difficult situations; Experience with HVAC systems in complex environments; Strong analytical skills for system performance and load comparison
