The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works on an acute surgical unit at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) providing care to a variety of medical and surgical patients in a collaborative environment. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute combined medical/surgical unit in accordance with Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) policies and procedures. Patients on this combined medical/surgical unit are received from the operating room, but may also come from the emergency department, and directly from medical clinics. This unit works under a collaborative care nursing model on all shifts with RNs, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Health Care Aides working together to provide patient care. All LPNs will have the opportunity to work to their full scope of practice within hospital policy which includes complex patient assessment and management, leadership, and inter-professional collaboration. In this position LPNs will direct and monitor the care provided by Health Care Aides and support their RN peers. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum of 2 years recent adult acute medical and/or surgical nursing experience required. Must be self-directed and exercise independent decision making, nursing judgment, and critical thinking skills. Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills are needed with the ability to effectively maintain collaborative working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team. Excellent time management and prioritization skills with a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic environment. Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills. Actively integrate patient and family centered care principles within own nursing practice. Understanding of CoAct and collaborative care in the acute care setting.

Recent surgical nursing experience preferred.
