Licensed Practical Nurses in the Medicine Program work with a diverse patient population and are able to develop a well-rounded knowledge base of internal medicine. A mix of experienced and newer graduates provides an exciting and rewarding opportunity in an ideal environment to develop expertise. The incumbent participates in the provision of health care to patients by utilizing their critical thinking skills and working up to their full scope of practice (i.e. the administration of intermittent intravenous medications, monitoring of continuous IV medication infusions etc.). This includes, but not limited to performing various treatments and procedures; assessing the patient, planning their care based on the assessment, observing, monitoring, evaluating the effectiveness of care provided, reporting and documenting changes in the patient's physical, mental or emotional state; assisting the patient with activities of daily living; providing both patient and family with relevant information and selected education and performing other related duties as required and/or delegated. The Unit Manager supervises the position. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Completion of all modules from the CLPNA required. Graduation from a recognized practical nursing program with the ability to work to a full scope of practice. Must be able to move, push pull, lift greater than 50lbs. Minimum of 1-year, recent acute care medicine nursing experience required. Basic computing skills required. Must be able to work to full scope of practice (physically, mentally and emotionally) on this very busy fast paced Gastrointestinal / Hepatology Unit. Must be able to work within posted position rotation and shifts. Must possess excellent communication, critical thinking, and time management skills. Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Must be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of infection prevention and control guidelines and procedures. Connect Care trained applicants preferred. Recent GI and hepatology medicine experience, preferred. Greater than 2 years in acute care medicine nursing experience, preferred. Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning, preferred.
