The Manager is a key leadership role in the Addiction & Mental Health (AMH) portfolio and reports directly to the Director of Children, Youth and Family AMH Central Zone. This leader will provide daily, direct inspired leadership and operational management for the Psychiatric Emergency Support Program in the Red Deer Regional Hospital Emergency Department. The program serves individuals of all ages who present at the RDRHC ED for concerns regarding their addiction and or mental health needs or these needs may be identified during a physical concern presentation. This interdisciplinary team providing bedside care and assessment includes Registered Nurses/Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Practical Nurses, Mental Health Aides, and others within the department. Key activities of the Manager position include recruitment, orientation & training, and ensuring clinical practice provides effective care of individuals needing prompt, compassionate, and appropriate services aligned to the vision and mandate of AHS. Leading AMH quality improvement initiatives and taking part in upcoming project work will also be a priority. Collaboration and alignment with the Managers within RDRHC is essential in this role, particularly with the Managers of Hospital Based AMH supports. Please note additional program responsibilities and oversight are likely to be added to this portfolio in the future. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Applying best evidence informed practice and using a continuous quality improvement approach, the Manager will ensure that services delivered by the team(s) meet the needs of service users and stakeholders. This role is responsible to coach team members to achieve comprehensive and integrated care planning, promote the development of clinical practice quality improvements, implement evidence-based practice, and critically assess, evaluate, anticipate, and address risks to patient and staff safety. This role leads the implementation of provincial, zone and local clinical and operational priorities and initiatives. The Manager will have an active relationship with physicians, service users and other invested parties to continually gauge the quality of services provided and to facilitate seamless and continuous care. The Manager is expected to recruit highly skilled and committed staff, as well as oversee the daily operations of the AMH program - including the practical, financial, and complex clinical aspects of the services. This position is a key member of the Red Deer CYF AMH leadership group and works collaboratively with the larger Central Zone leadership team.

The successful candidate must have strong clinical nursing skills with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in clinical nursing practice. Preference for experience within an acute care setting. Demonstrated background in leadership, facilitation, coaching, people management, change management, and quality improvement. Thorough knowledge of addiction and mental health assessment and treatment in an acute care setting is required. Knowledge of AHS, Alberta’s healthcare structure, and of collective agreements. Baccalaureate degree in Nursing needed. Equivalency of education and experience may be considered. Active registration with CARNA/CRPNA needed. Current BCLS-HCP required. Experience in the delivery of trauma-informed care is required. Demonstrated competency in leading self, engaging others, achieving results, building relationships/coalitions and championing system change.

Three year’s knowledge and previous work experience within the Addiction & Mental Health portfolio required.

Experience in leading healthcare teams and providing innovative solutions to complex system issues. Proven coaching skills that support team members to reach their full potential. An ability to work hard, have fun and contribute to a dynamic, successful healthcare team. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management role, ideally in Nursing Manager capacity.
