Operating Room Technician - Licensed Practical Nurse

The OR Technician (ORT) - Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a Perioperative Nursing Specialty, under limited supervision, utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the provision of care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The ORT - LPN with a Perioperative Nursing Specialty maintains and constantly updates specialized skill set in addition to the generalist skills of the acute care LPN to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care in the surgical suite. The ORT - LPN with a perioperative Nursing Specialty works to full scope of practice as defined by the Health Professions Act, maintaining the standards of ORNAC as well as CLPNA. Decisions are made in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team in accordance with the UAH, MAHI and Stollery Children's Hospital policies and procedures. Understands and works with Family Centered Care philosophy. This position reports to the Operating Room Manager, but when required, support will be provided to areas supporting the Operative Services Program including: Pediatric Preadmission Clinic/Same Day Admit Unit, Stollery day ward, Pediatric Post Anesthetic Care Unit, Pediatric Operating Room, and the Booking Office.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Successful completion of the ORT program and ORT Certificate. Consideration will be given to individuals with relevant 5 year surgical experience. Excellent organizational and assessment skills with ability to work independently and communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills required with ability to set priorities and work as team player in fast pace environment. Reliability and dependability is required. Must be able to perform full duties with the ability to work with patients of varying mobility. Successfully complete the Stollery Medication Math Exam with 90% or greater during orientation. Successfully complete the Stollery PEARS course (Pediatric Assessment Recognition and Stabilization), during orientation. Pediatric Operating Room provides perioperative care to patient from a variety of services including: neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, general surgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, dental surgery, oncology, ENT, and plastic surgery.

Candidates with recent relevant perioperative experience, who have not completed a perioperative course, will be considered.
