As a member of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Pharmacy Team, the Pharmacy Assistant will work with Pharmacy Technicians & Pharmacists working to their full scope of practice. Under limited supervision of the Operations Manager, and the direct supervision of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician, the Pharmacy Assistant performs various medication related duties including: distribution, delivery and repackaging of medications; management and replenishment of medication inventory levels; compounding non-sterile medication; and moderately complex clerical duties. Core duties may include, but are not limited to: Transports pharmacy items between pharmacy, patient care areas & other departments. Repackages and labels pharmaceuticals Monitors, orders and receives pharmacy inventory and supplies according to established quotas. Performs all tasks involving medication ward stock including credit and debit of inventory. Working with Automated Dispensing Cabinets (Omnicell) Participates in narcotics distribution according to established procedures. Prints and distributes reports from pharmacy computer system. Performs routine physical cleaning & maintenance on pharmacy equipment. Completes records & filing associated with all duties. Communicates unit-based issues to other pharmacy staff for resolution. Participates in hospital, departmental and/or quality assurance activities to ensure standards are maintained. Assists in training and orientation of new employees. Maintains site-specific standards of performance, including achievement of mandatory internal certifications. Performs other duties deemed necessary.

As a Pharmacy Assistant, you will be responsible for the packaging, distributing, shipping medications and the management and replenishment of medication inventory levels under the general supervision of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Recent hospital pharmacy related experience and a working knowledge of Pharmacy terms and medication names. Graduate of a recognized pharmacy assistant program and/or recent hospital/retail pharmacy experience Knowledge of EPIC (Pharmacy Module) computer software. Experience with Windows-based computer applications. Basic knowledge of purchasing, receiving, and inventory control of pharmaceuticals to minimize outdated medications. Must be fluent in the English language (written and verbal). Must be able to type (40 words per minute desired). Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Good organizational, problem solving and decision-making ability. Must be accurate, reliable, precise, co-operative, able to demonstrate effective service attitude, and self-motivated. Must be able to work both independently and co-operatively in a team environment. Must be able to adapt to new technologies and changing workflow patterns. Familiarity with the operation of various office equipment, unit dose packaging equipment and pharmaceutical compounding equipment. Must be in good physical condition as majority of shift involves: heavy lifting, standing, crouching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, walking and standing for extended periods of time. 1+ year experience in hospital pharmacy supporting rural sites. 6 months + with Automatic dispensing cabinets (Omnicell, Pyxis). 1 + year in Narcotics. 1+ year experience inventory management. 6 months + experience in compounding (manufacturing), including reconstitution of products and unit dose repackaging.
