Pharmacy Technician

Core duties may include, but are not limited to: Order entry, preparation, repackaging and final product checking of chemotherapy, sterile and non-sterile products, individual patient prescriptions, and ward stock. Provide accurate and efficient dispensing of medication. Provide service line delivery of medication to inpatient units. Provide guidance to and assist with the training and orientation of staff and students. Provide direction and supervision to Pharmacy Assistants in their day-to-day duties Provide clinical support, obtaining information to facilitate medication reconciliation activities including patient interview and clarifies discrepancies and/or collects and organizes information to support the provision of direct patient care. Builds interactive relationships with all members of the healthcare team including communicating with nursing staff to clarify orders and requests, triaging information requests and distribution issues. Maintain a high standard of performance through completion of internal validation programs that assess proficiency in identified tasks such as aseptic technique, computer order entry, chemotherapy preparation and final product checking. Participate in inventory management duties. Participate in special projects and programs as assigned. Maintain department records, statistics and prepare reports as required.

As a Pharmacy Technician I, you will be responsible for the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products. You will receive and triage medication orders, compound and repackage medication and prepare sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products.

Completion of a CCAPP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as a Pharmacy Technician.

Registered or provisional registration, with the Alberta College of Pharmacists as a Pharmacy Technician required. Prior hospital experience with a variety of responsibilities including but not limited to order entry, checking, sterile compounding, chemotherapy preparation and all aspects of drug distribution. Experience with medication reconciliation and the obtaining of a Best Possible Medication History in a clinical setting within the last 2 years is an asset 1-year minimum experience in the last 5 years in all aspects of Chemotherapy; including but not limited to receiving, order entry, setup and preparation. Demonstrated communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work in teams. Demonstrated computer or word processing skills. Demonstrated commitment to continual personal quality improvement and lifelong learning.

Experience in the last 5 years in pediatric or neonatal patient population. Experience in dispensing Investigational Drug Studies and Special Access Drug Program. 6 months minimum experience in retail pharmacy setting is an asset. Membership in a relevant pharmacy professional organization. Membership in CAPhO (Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology).
