Description
Are you a dynamic leader looking for a meaningful, short-term opportunity to make an impact? We’re seeking a temporary replacement for a key leadership role within the Department of Family Medicine - someone who is passionate about supporting family physicians and shaping the future of healthcare in Calgary. In this role, you’ll step in to lead a strategy focused on recruitment, retention, and recognition of family physicians across the city. You’ll be joining a smart, collaborative team committed to finding innovative and progressive ways to ensure our Medical Staff are aware of local opportunities, feel supported in their clinical roles, are recognized for their contributions, and continue to practice in Calgary. We’re looking for someone who brings the right mix of curiosity, enthusiasm, and interpersonal finesse, coupled with a strategic mindset and a comfort level with data and analytics. This is a temporary position, ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys meaningful collaboration, and wants to make a tangible difference in the physician workforce landscape.
As the temporary Recruitment Specialist, you will serve as a subject matter expert in Physician Talent Acquisition and Recognition, working in close collaboration with clinical, operational, business support, and leadership teams within the Department of Family Medicine (DFM), as well as others within Medical Affairs. You will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership related to physician recruitment, retention, and recognition. This includes offering input on decision-making, resource allocation (both financial and human), and the direction of key initiatives. You will work closely with the Clinical and Academic Department Heads to support the development of multi-year workforce plans, contribute to zone and provincial workforce reporting, and lead the continued advancement and implementation of a physician retention strategy. Additionally, you will act as the first point of contact for family physicians interested in relocating to Calgary and take a lead role in promoting the DFM through recruitment events and engagement opportunities. These activities require a balance of strong leadership, coordination, a desire for connection and relationship building, and a results-focused approach. You will also provide day-to-day supervision and mentorship to an Administrative Assistant, ensuring seamless coordination and administrative support across recruitment, retention, and recognition initiatives. This position calls for someone who can confidently navigate both strategic planning and hands-on project management, balancing the specific needs of each clinical section with Medical Affairs guidelines and broader departmental objectives. Success in this role will depend on sound independent judgment and previous experience, particularly when addressing complex or novel challenges.
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Health Administration, Business, Human Resources, Public Health, or a related discipline. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in recruitment, workforce planning, or talent management - ideally within a healthcare, academic, or similarly complex environment. Demonstrated success in leading or supporting strategic initiatives, including planning, execution, and evaluation. Experience providing day-to-day supervision or mentorship to administrative support roles. Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities and stakeholders to achieve targeted outcomes. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build effective relationships across diverse teams and organizational levels. Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, including comfort working with data to support decision-making. Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and navigate complex or novel situations with professionalism and discretion.
As Required.
Experience in a medical department, academic health setting, or healthcare recruitment. Knowledge of Alberta’s health system (CPSA, AHS, physician resource planning). Background in physician engagement, recognition, or retention strategy. Certification/training in project management (e.g., PROSCI), physician recruitment (CaSPR), or HR (e.g., CPHR) preferred.
