Crisis Stabilization Unit focuses on stabilizing acute addiction and mental health crisis, patient education, instilling hope in the patient’s recovery, and connecting individuals to community-based resources within a 24-hour period. The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN) - Crisis Stabilization works to full scope as a member of the health care team. Using your understanding of the DSM-V, Alberta Mental Health Act, and other governing standards/legislation for practice, you will competently perform required physical and mental health assessments, intervene with patients in health teaching / health promotion, de-escalation, one-to-one / group psychosocial interventions, and group facilitation while maintaining a strong patient - family centred care focus. In addition, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse - Crisis Stabilization will demonstrate ongoing professional development and participate in learning opportunities and quality improvement initiatives as well as maintain up to date on evidence-based best practice changes within and outside of recovery alberta. You will be required to deal with patients who, at times, can become aggressive, unpredictable and high-risk and must be able to de-escalate patients and respond appropriately. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate decision-making, critical thinking, organization and conflict resolution skills; interpersonal and communication skills; build and maintain relationships; patient teaching, advocacy, and patient and family-centered care; show initiative and independence; be adaptable and flexible; and foster positive relationships in a team environment.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting within the last 3 years. Consideration could be given to students who have completed a final focus in adult acute inpatient mental health. Knowledge of mental health diagnosis (DSM V), symptomatology and related treatment modalities/interventions. Crisis management skills include Suicide Risk assessments, intervention and treatment and de-escalation skills. Computer proficiency - Microsoft Word, Outlook. Training and experience in therapeutic modalities such as Trauma Informed Care, CBT, DBT and/or other evidence-based modalities. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred; however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in the community sector will be considered. Nursing experience in an acute adult inpatient psychiatric setting. Consideration could be given to students who have completed a final focus in this area. Group therapy facilitation. Working knowledge of CPS. NVCI training certification within the last 2 years. Participation in professional development, committees or quality improvement initiatives.
