Alberta Health Services (AHS) is committed to increase and improve Albertans access, quality and safety of surgical services across the province with the Alberta Surgical Initiative (ASI). AHS is looking for Registered Nurses to help make this initiative a success and are offering a funded educational opportunity to enhance your nursing career with a certificate in Perioperative Nursing. AHS is partnered with Macewan University to provide the Perioperative Nursing Program which consists of 10 weeks of in-class/online theory learning, 60 hours of labs, 380 hours of clinical practicums. Clinical placements are within the Edmonton Zone at one or more of the following surgical sites: Sturgeon Community Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Stollery Children’s Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital, Mazankowski Heart Institute, Leduc Community Hospital, Grey Nuns Community Hospital and the Misericordia Community Hospital. With a Perioperative Nursing Certificate, you will have the knowledge and skills to provide safe, perioperative patient care in accordance with CRNA, Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) and CSA standards of practice. As a Perioperative Nurse you are monitoring the patient during surgery and coordinating care throughout the perioperative experience. You will act as a patient advocate while delivering safe, effective and efficient care in both a scrub and a circulating role and provide a link between the OR and the patient care units. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to advanced clinical nursing activities using evidence-based measures and outcomes. Upon successful completion of the program and the conclusion of this 6-month temporary position, there will be the opportunity to apply on vacant OR positions within the Edmonton Zone. There are 5 RN positions available.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Current experience in an acute care setting. A strong interest in working in a surgical suite (OR) environment. Ability to demonstrate the desire and commitment to a comprehensive 6-month course. Commitment to the Perioperative Specialty area upon completion of the program and orientation period. Ability to travel to appropriate site/ campus and clinical practice areas. Ability to meet the physical demands of the position. Ability to perform consistently in a highly organized and rapid moving environment. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Demonstrates communication skills promoting respect and team engagement.

Surgical acute care experience; and/or operation room exposure/experience.
