The perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) has focused knowledge & skills in Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology. Will demonstrate competence in delivering safe, effective and efficient care in the minor procedure and clinic environment. The RN performs patient assessments including vision screening, tonometry, and patient education for various ophthalmic sub-specialties. The incumbent responds to emergencies within the Eye Clinic and vicinity. The RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients of altered visual and physical abilities requiring assistance and care during the perioperative patient and ambulatory care experience in accordance with hospital policies and standards. It is expected that the incumbent provides leadership in clinical practice through management of patient care, anticipating needs of the patient including ensuring equipment and supplies are available for the required diagnostics, interventions and procedures. The RN assumes responsibility and acts as a resource for staff skill development and support. As a leader/role model, the individual must demonstrate a positive attitude, contribute to quality initiatives and promote a professional work environment. Clinical knowledge/theory of sterile procedure in a clinical setting, instruments, equipment as required for procedures and critical thinking and application to individual scenarios. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to advanced clinical nursing activities.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Three (3) years surgical/perioperative experience required, 3 years specific experience in an ambulatory care setting with minor outpatient surgical procedure skills in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology required. Experience in a team leader role including charge nurse. Attention to detail. Commitment to ongoing learning. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Experience with Netcare & Connect Care/Ambulatory required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with patients of varied visual and physical assistance including positioning and assist to mobilization required. Strong organizational skills and supports efficient workflows. Incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Strong computer skills including experience in Microsoft Outlook, & MS Teams. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as turning and mobilizing patients.

Perioperative Certificate from an approved school of nursing. Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) Certification in Perioperative Nursing. Successful completion of an ophthalmic assisting course from a recognized institution. Must be able to support extensive orientation.
