Under the direction of the Manager of the Calgary STI Clinic, the Registered Nurse (RN) functions in an expanded scope of practice. The RN will be expected to function in an independent nursing practice, conducting health assessments, screening, microscopy, diagnosis, and treatment of Sexually Transmitted and Blood Bourne Infections (STBBI). This nursing practice is directed by The Blue Book - Standards for the Evaluation and Management of STI Clinic Patients (AHS - latest edition) and under the direct supervision of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for Calgary. The RN will also be responsible in monitoring and interpretation of laboratory results of the STI clinic clients, client counseling and education in the prevention of STBBI, contact tracing and partner notification, and documentation in the client chart. In addition, the RN will be required to provide appropriate health care resources in collaboration with the client, establish and maintain relationships: community clinics, physicians and emergency/urgent care centers, and community agencies to promote understanding of the AHS STI program. Finally, the RN will participate with the STI program in education initiatives and the planning, integration, implementation, and evaluation of clinical practice and strategies to reduce STIs.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). A minimum three (3) years within the past five (5) years of experience with current and direct patient care within an STI Clinic is required. Experience/lived experience in creating safer spaces for all people including all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions, those who identify as people of color, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, or newcomers to Canada. Computer proficiency with complex programs and databases; documentation is completed in the Electronic Medical Records. Ability to manage complex clients with minimal supervision. Ability to think independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and demanding work environment. Excellent attendance record & reliability. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) demonstrated through previous employment records & references. Ability to independently support a patient to the ground or sustain a patient in Trendelenburg position (lift/carry 30+ lbs. - waist to floor, floor to crown). Ability to handle periods of intense activity and multi-task throughout high-volume clinics, including moving throughout the clinic up to a distance of 8 km per shift. Ability to sustain periods of stationary activity. Ability to independently perform the skills of a certified BLS provider. Knowledge and understanding of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Completion of certification in sexual health & STBBI test & treatment. Current working knowledge of STBBIs, lived experience/experience working with people disproportionately impacted by health disparities & various diverse groups. Experience/training providing trauma-informed, harm-reduction & stigma-reduction approaches to care. References to back up soft skills in time management, efficiency, prioritization & accountability.
