Description
The Central Porter - Service Worker 1 is responsible for a variety of duties supporting department/unit operations within the UAH, Mazankowski, and Edmonton Kaye Clinic. This role involves transporting both patients and equipment, as well as cleaning equipment, in accordance with Alberta Health Services standards and practices. The primary work of Central Porters is to move patients between areas of the hospital to support service delivery. This includes moving patients (utilizing the mode that best meets the patient’s needs - via bed, wheelchair etc.), and morgue transfers. Safe patient transport includes verifying patient identification and their destination, assisting healthcare providers in transferring patients to wheelchairs or stretchers (if required), securing treatment devices, including but not limited to IV poles, foley catheters, and oxygen cylinders. The Service Worker 1 also verifies oxygen transfer tickets with the sending unit and ensures the proper transfer to wall oxygen at the receiving unit. This includes verifying the handover of the oxygen ticket to the responsible party. Central Porters must be able to understand and follow infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols, including wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for patients under IPC guidelines. The Central Porter participates in cleaning and disinfecting equipment between patient use and locating equipment and returning it to designated storage areas, such as wheelchair corrals and the Emergency Department or other areas of the site as requested.
As a Service Worker I, you will be responsible for transporting patients (clients/residents) and equipment to and from different patient care areas within a hospital site. You will distribute and replenish hospital supplies throughout the units and clean equipment and patient care areas as directed. You may also transport lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required.
Grade 12 or equivalent.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently. Current BLS-HCP. This job is physically demanding, and the candidate must be able to walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift, push, and transfer over 50kg as required. Must be able to handle, lift, and move heavy, awkward, or oversized equipment and/or patients. Must be able to cope with high levels of stress, fluctuating priorities, and time sensitive deadlines. Must be proficient in hand hygiene.
It’s Your Move. Oxygen Ticket Transfer training. Proficient with Connect Care-Porter Staff role. N95 Mask Fitting. Versed in donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment.
