The Adult Post Anesthetic Care Unit is an integral component of the Operative Services Portfolio at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually. A Level 1 Trauma Center, the UAH provides surgical access to various specialties including, Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Ortho Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. The Post Anesthetic Care Unit provides comprehensive care in a critical and highly specialized area to post-surgical patients as they recover from general and/or regional anesthesia. The successful candidate will provide primarily service in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, but may also provide support to the Level 3 Operating Theatres, as well as the Short Stay surgical care area. Primary responsibilities include patient transportation, assisting both nursing and medical staff with surgical positioning and preparation of patients undergoing surgery. Cleaning, setup, restocking, and the safe handling of medical equipment and sterile products will be frequent tasks alongside any further tasks as assigned.

As a Service Worker II, you will be responsible for readying supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate use/reuse by healthcare staff. You will distribute and replenish patient care supplies, perform quality control tests on equipment and record maintenance data. You may also transport patients (clients/residents), equipment, lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required. In addition, you will ensure that patient care areas and other assigned areas are accurately stocked and that specialty equipment required by the healthcare staff is available.

Grade 12 or equivalent.

Current Basic Life Support (Level C) is required. Must be able to read and communicate fluently in the English language. Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment as part of a multidisciplinary team while maintaining confidential information. Must be reliable and dependable.

Current employment in a Service Worker 2 position or higher is an asset.
