The Stollery Emergency Department (ED) Mental Health (MH) Team is part of the Children, Youth, and Families, Addiction and Mental Health (CYF AMH) portfolio and is a specialty service within the Stollery ED. The Stollery ED MH Social Worker reports to the Care Manager of Urgent Services in CYF AMH. The MH Social Worker applies discipline specific skills to provide care and support to children, youth, and their families who present to the Stollery ED with mental health as their primary concern. The care provided by the ED MH Social Worker must be concurrent-capable, family and patient-centered, trauma informed, and done in collaboration with the ED physician, Psychiatrist, and other care providers. The MH Social Worker demonstrates advanced skills in mental health risk assessment, risk management, non-violent crisis intervention, therapeutic engagement, safety planning, collaboration, and provides psycho social interventions as needed. The MH Social Worker requires in-depth knowledge of community resources for an effective and safe discharge from the ED. The MH Social Worker works closely with the Crisis Team, Urgent Clinic, Family Counselor, other child and adolescent mental health care providers, the general ED team and community partners such as Children’s Services, Family Supports to Children with Disabilities, Police, and School Personnel. Your services may include: psychosocial assessment, risk screening, counselling and discharge planning. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

As a Social Worker II, you will be a member of an inter-disciplinary team and provides a range of social work services to patients and their families. Your services may include: psychosocial assessment, resource-based interventions, individual, group and family treatment, risk screening, counselling, case management and coordination, transition or discharge planning, and prevention, promotion and public awareness activities.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Social Work. Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).

Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in community mental health required. A minimum of three (3) years child and adolescent mental health experience within the last five (5) years. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with ability to function in a high acuity, fast paced, changing environment. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Training & experience in mental health assessments and therapy. Knowledge of treatment modalities/behavioral interventions for children. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of discipline specific skills and practices. Experience working with AHS & external community partners. Preference given for experience working in an ED or other high acuity area. Involvement in family teaching & knowledge of community programs related to Child & Adolescent Mental Health.
