Description
The Therapy Assistant works under the direction of Physical Therapists providing rehabilitation to clients. Provides direct client care by assisting therapists with the application of hot/cold modalities, pool therapy, outcome data collection, supervision of exercise programs, therapeutic group activities, progression of treatment programs based on the Therapy Assistant progression parameters and activities of daily living. Assists with the delivery of direct care by participating in the setup for treatment activities, facilitating client participation in treatment, coordinating equipment loan procedures, providing inventory control, and performing other support duties as required. Assignment is determined by operational need and position will require flexibility and adaptability to change.
As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.
Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.
Post-secondary education in a recognized Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Assistant Program is required. Equivalences in education and experience may be considered. Ability to prioritize and organize workload with minimal direct supervision and incorporate creative problem solving is required. Effective written, verbal, communication, and computer skills are required. The successful incumbent will be capable of performing lifts, transfers, repositioning, and other physically demanding activities associated with this role.
Previous experience working in a rehabilitation hospital is preferred. Experience with Connect Care is considered an asset.
