This is an exciting opportunity to work as an Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) in a busy Intensive Care Unit. The RAH ICU is a 29-bed unit characterized by high acuity and high occupancy. The ICU cares for critically ill patients from the medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecologic, neurosurgical, and trauma programs. The unit provides evidence-based services within an inter-disciplinary team model. Registered Nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit undergo extensive orientation and training to be able to care for critically ill patients utilizing critical thinking and an interdisciplinary approach. Undergraduate Nurses in this environment are paired with trained Critical Care nurses to provide mentorship and guidance in clinical practice. Undergraduate Nurses would not be expected to independently care for critically ill patients but would be able to advance their knowledge base and skills within this supportive environment. The nursing activity performed, and the level of supervision required is determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by professional associations, AHS and the competency of the UNE. The UNE will be accountable for providing safe patient care in accordance with his or her level of educational preparation and competency while under the supervision of a trained critical care nurse.

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.
