Description
If you are an Undergraduate Nurse (UNE) who likes small town living, this summer employment position in Claresholm might be for you. As the successful candidate for this position, you will cover Long Term Care in the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre and model Patient and Family Centered Care. Situated 110 km South of Calgary, serving a ranching and agricultural region. There are multiple summer position openings with your application to this casual summer work posting. Positions hold a range of summer student hours, with varying hours and some are guaranteeing 32 hours full time a week (following a rotation of days, evenings and weekends). Your job duties will vary while being an UNE at the WCCCC, which will include: Being an extra/supernumerary nurse student following the RN in charge’s direction with providing residents medications and treatment needs for residents. As well, scheduled shifts will alternate with working as a health care aide and providing hands on care for long term care residents.
The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.
Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.
The UNE will demonstrate initiative and will seek out and accept direction as required. Critical thinking skills, working within your scope of practice, including clinical judgment, problem-solving skills, and strong decision-making abilities are essential. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required as is a commitment to integrating Patient and Family Centered Care principles into your practice. The ability to adapt quickly to changing and fluctuating workloads will be vital. A commitment to promoting a positive work environment is valued. Must be able to handle the physical demands of working on the unit either as a UNE or as a HCA position. Note: This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant which restricts eligibility to only applicants between the ages of 15 and 30 AND either Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection have been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act at the time of hire.
Dementia experience is preferred.
