Description
The South Health Campus (SHC) provides surgical, medical, women’s health, mental health and emergency services in both inpatient and outpatient environments. The campus also has a YMCA, retail services and community partnerships. The SHC has four key pillars of service: Collaborative Practice, Wellness, Patient and Family Centered Care, and Innovation. These pillars guide the development and delivery of service to all patients and family. This position is a planned Surgical Services staff member, shared between the 2 surgical service acute care inpatient units. The successful candidate will support the 2 areas and be required to fulfil relief needs for all areas. Under the direction of the individual Unit Manager, the Unit Clerk is responsible for front desk operations on acute care surgical units. Duties include, but are not limited to; Customer service as initial greeting of patients, visitors and multi-disciplinary team members arriving to the department, Liaise with Bed Placement and nursing units regarding patient admission and transfers. Registers patient’s admission / discharges / transfers in Connect Care. Receives laboratory results via telephone and relays information to appropriate doctor/nursing staff in the allocated areas. Locates and retrieves patient history / and or hospital and test records from internal or external health records departments. Contacts physician’s offices and other related works area’s such as OR, PACU and other areas when requested to do so. Prints relevant clinical data in time of Connect Care downtime. Provides clarification and information to physicians and nursing staff regarding unit and hospital clerical administrative procedures. Responds to emergencies on the unit (codes, code red, and security violation) communicates the emergency to switchboard and directs responding staff to the emergency location.
As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program. Current resume required. Medical terminology required. 1 year acute hospital or surgery experience required. Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills: Connect Care and Netcare. Demonstrated ability to prioritize in a rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills through computer, verbal and written means, in a professional and mature manner.
Demonstrated ability to successfully establish relationships with both patients and families and engage them in their care. Demonstrated high quality customer service ability and achievements is necessary. Demonstrated high functioning time-management and organizational skills.
