Description
Within the Women’s Health program, the labour and delivery unit aim to attract and retain high quality unit clerks. Under limited supervision, the Unit Clerk is responsible for performing clerical, receptionist and AD&T responsibilities for the unit. These include performing admission, discharge and transfer functions in Connect Care, answering telephone calls, the patient call bell system, and monitoring of unit and patient access. As the key point of first contact for the inpatient and outpatient areas the Unit Clerk plays a key role in fostering an effective team environment on the unit; the Unit Clerk is instrumental in facilitating communication between nursing and other health disciplines, departments, patients and families, and in maintaining confidentiality of patient information. The Unit Clerk is also an essential team member when unit emergencies arise and is responsible for paging of physicians and code teams. This position is an essential asset to the smooth and efficient operation of the unit.
As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program or recent experience (within the past 6 months) as a Unit Clerk on a dynamic, acute care unit (e.g. L&D, Emergency) (within the past 6 months).
2-year Unit Clerk experience in L&D preferred. Connect Care and Netcare patient registration preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills. Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, interpersonal skills . Understanding of patient and family centered care, ability to establish relationships with patients and families.
