Reporting to the Patient Care Manager - Women's Health Obstetrics and Postpartum Units. The Unit Manager is responsible for the efficient and effective coordination of material, systems, financial and human resources to ensure the provision of safe, high quality patient care in a cost-effective manner by providing innovative leadership and fostering a professional practice climate. The Women's Health Postpartum (2 West) Unit Manager assumes responsibility for the day-today operations, overseeing staffing requirements, appropriate use of supplies, a consistent presence to meet the increasing demands of the clinics, liaison with other departments to ensure adequate resources are available, recruitment and selection of staff in collaboration. The work team is directly composed of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Unit Clerks and Service Workers.

The Unit Manager is a key leadership role and is accountable for the overall performance of the inpatient care provided on 2 West at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women and the Royal Alexandra Hospital - Edmonton. The Unit Manager ensures the delivery of safe patient care to birth parent/newborn dyads. The Unit Manager is responsible and accountable for providing operational leadership and decision making in support of direct patient care including On Call Responsibilities for the Women's Health Portfolio. Facilitating and sustaining the learning needs of nursing and support staff in order to optimize their professional and clinical department; Identifying budget requirements for the unit (human, material and capital resources) to safely meet unit and patient needs and optimize the unit workflow; Resolving complex and challenging problems concerning human resources management and staffing levels in a unionized environment, to ensure adequate service levels are maintained. The Unit Manager will develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders as required providing optimal and integrated services and fostering a patient centered and Trauma Informed Care Environment for all patients and families.

Current registration with the College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required. Current CPR (BCLS-HCP). Minimum of 2-3 years leadership experience as a Unit Manager, Charge Nurse, or an Assistant Head Nurse in a complex health care environment. Experience with Postpartum nursing preferred. Strong organizational and leadership skills are required and should include demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and teaching, and the ability to build confidence in others. Ability to manage in a highly organized and rapidly moving environment. Must be able to work independently and as a part of a team. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate communication skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Demonstrated advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. A strong track record in establishing and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is necessary.

Effective teamwork, conflict resolution, change and resource management skills are essential, incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Advanced computer skills including experience in Connect Care, Microsoft Outlook, Office and email.

Post Graduate education in Nursing, Health or Health Care Management preferred.
