Job Summary

The Central Services Group, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Attorney General, is recruiting an experienced and knowledgeable Legal Office Manager with current supervisory experience for a regular, full-time position.

The Legal Office Manager is expected to maintain a high standard in the delivery of administrative management to the Central Services Group, including the delivery of confidential human resources services, recruitment, as well as the management of leave, records and performance management of direct reports. The Legal Office Manager will also direct, supervise, train and mentor legal assistants and will ensure the full scope of legal support services are provided to the law group. As the position is located in a satellite office, responsibilities will also include direct facilities management.

In this high profile and fast-paced environment, self-motivation, the ability to work well under pressure and a strong initiative are highly valued qualities. Excellent time management and organizational skills are required, a keen attention to detail, as well as flexibility in responding to emerging priorities, including working overtime when necessary. In addition to excellent interpersonal skills, the successful candidate must be a strong team player, who will be required to work collaboratively with the Legal Administrative Officer and the management team within the Central Services Group, including providing back-up coverage and assistance when necessary. The successful candidate must also be equally strong working independently.

The Legal Office Manager will be required to perform the duties and responsibilities with minimum supervision, maintaining confidentiality and using discretion when addressing sensitive issues. A strong working knowledge of legal processes is also required, including an awareness of key Law Society Rules, such as solicitor/client privilege and conflicts, will have a minimum of four years of experience working in a legal office environment, and may be required to provide legal support services to the Deputy Supervisors within the Central Services Group.

The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. The Ministry of Attorney General is structured to carry out this mandate under the direction of the Attorney General, and Legal Services Branch supports the Ministry in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. Legal Services Branch provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. Legal Services Branch’s clients include all Ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.

Job Requirements:

  • Secondary school graduation, plus a legal assistant certificate from a recognized institution; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience in a legal environment may be considered.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in a legal office environment.
  • Experience working in a team setting.


Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • A minimum of 2 years of management or supervisory experience, including supporting human resources services, recruitment, performance management, leave management, change management, training, and records management.
  • Experience in management of the provision of legal secretarial and legal administrative support services, coordinating overall workflow and developing options to ensure delivery of work product in a demanding office environment with shifting priorities.
  • Experience working with senior management.
  • Experience working with government.
  • Experience working as a Legal Assistant or equivalent.
