The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC’s primary emergency response organization. It operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six fire centres, thirty-three zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.

The Deputy Fire Centre Manager (Deputy) collaborates with the Fire Centre Manager and Fire Centre leadership team to set the direction, manage and administer operations.

This position leads and manages up to 500 program staff in the planning, delivery and evaluation of all four pillars of wildfire management in the region. This includes stakeholder and partner engagement, statutory authority over the Wildfire Act and Regulation, and promotes a culture of safety and well-being.

Job Requirements:

  • University degree or technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management/public administration or equivalent education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in emergency management or natural resources management
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders and partners to further mutual interests and address issues
  • Experience leading and coaching diverse teams
  • Experience in business planning, procurement, and financial management
  • Experience in management and supervision of diverse working groups/teams
  • Valid BC Driver’s licence or equivalent

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and/or overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

About this Position:
These positions are excluded from union membership.
4 Positions available. 1 Position is available in each of the following: Prince George Fire Centre, Coastal Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre and the Kamloops Fire Centre. See attachment for complete list of locations in each of the fire centre areas.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement. Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future permanent vacancies across the Ministry of Forests, BC Wildfire Service.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
