LSO AGRL 3 - Industry Specialist - Agronomy

The Team

On the Livestock Team, you'll join a passionate and diverse group of Industry Specialists dedicated to supporting BC's livestock sectors. The Livestock Team brings together expertise across the livestock sectors including beef, dairy, poultry, hogs, bison, sheep, goats and agroforestry to serve both regional and provincial needs. With five team members-including a manager, the team works collaboratively with colleagues from other regions, Resource Management Specialists, veterinarians, and policy staff to make a meaningful impact in agriculture across the province.

The Role
As an Industry Specialist- Agronomy on our team, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to work directly with industry associations, regulatory agencies, and government partners to elevate the forage sector’s competitiveness and sustainability. Your technical expertise will help strengthen food security for British Columbians and support the success of local crop production enterprises. Qualifications

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) in a relevant field of study (plant science, agronomy, agriculture) or equivalent as recognized by the relevant professional association (BCIA). Preference may be given to those with a graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in plant science related discipline.
• Registered as a Professional Agrologist, or immediately eligible* for registration as a Professional Agrologist, with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists.
  • *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional Agrologist in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to the BCIA within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the BCIA reviews their qualifications to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
• Valid B.C. driver’s licence.

Experience:

• Advanced knowledge of plant physiology, forage management and grazing systems.
• A minimum of 5 years experience working in agriculture sector, including knowledge and technology transfer and working with industry stakeholders.
• Experience working with other levels of government and with forage and livestock producers, including seeking consensus, forming agreements, and engaging industry associations.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:

• 6 months or more of experience in the development and submission of briefing notes, reports, and responses for executive to respond to: media, general public, industry, other ministries and other levels of government.
• A strong understanding of the local and global competitiveness issues and human resource challenges facing the forage sector, especially within British Columbia.
• A strong knowledge of BC’s crop production systems, operational realities, sustainability challenges, economic, political and social issues, especially the forage, and livestock sector.
• A strong understanding of Provincial and federal roles and jurisdiction in the industry development of the forage sectors.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and interests.

• Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry

• Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Position may be available in Kamloops, Williams Lake, Kelowna, Vernon, Ft. St. John, Dawson Creek or Prince George
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list for future permanent positions may be established.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
