The Team
The South Coast Team - Agriculture Development Unit, ESSB, is a collaborative and experienced group dedicated to supporting the agriculture industry in one of the province's most diverse growing regions. Comprised of three Regional Agrologists and three Horticulture Industry Specialists, all Professional Agrologists, this established team works closely with other ministry specialists and planners to address regional challenges and drive sustainable economic growth.
The Role
As part of the Regional Agrologist team, you’ll join a group of dedicated professionals committed to supporting the agricultural sector. This role involves building relationships with farmers, First Nations, local governments, and stakeholders while developing programs, leading projects, and addressing challenges that impact the industry. This role offers professional autonomy, a mix of office and fieldwork, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in communities while advancing your career.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Agriculture from an approved university, preferably specializing in horticulture, agronomy, farm business, livestock, or Agroecology or a related natural resource science (e.g. soil science, ecology) and three (3) years of professional experience; AND
- Registered as a Professional Agrologist, or immediately eligible* for registration as a Professional Agrologist, with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists (BCIA). *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Agrologist in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to the BCIA within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the BCIA review their qualifications to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration. Registration number will be requested.
Experience
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience in one (1) or more of the following:
- Farm business management
- Soil and/or nutrient management
- Livestock production
- Agricultural crop production
- Must maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s license.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
- A degree in Agriculture.
- Experience in business planning, marketing, and/or economic development.
- Experience in consensus building, negotiating and conflict resolution.
- Operational experience in crop or livestock production.
- Agricultural irrigation or water management experience
- Agricultural Extension and Communication experience
WILLINGNESS STATEMENTS:
- Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
- Conduct field work which may include work outside of regular office hours, travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight, outdoor work in all weather conditions, and deployment to emergency operation centers.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future permanent and/or temporary vacancies across the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Position is located in Abbotsford
