SPO 30R - Team Leader, SAJE

Bring your leadership skills, expertise in relationship building and experience working with ministry and community partners in a unique role designed to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable youth and young adults, by leading the implementation of a new service delivery model to improve transition planning services for youth in and from care.

Under Budget 2022, the Ministry announced the creation of a new Youth Transitions Program to support youth and young adults in and from care aged 14 to 27 with new and enhanced services and benefits. The program was newly named on May 30, 2023, as Strengthening Abilities and Journeys of Empowerment (SAJE). The name was chosen by the Ministry’s Youth Advisory Council and reflects a positive approach that celebrates the journey from youth to adulthood. The program includes the introduction of funding to better support youth and young adults as they transition from care, expanded program eligibility and duration, and the creation of post-19 SAJE Guides to connect young adults from care to supports and services and assist them in achieving their goals through to their 25th birthday.

Implementation of the SAJE program has been underway on South Vancouver Island since September 2023. The Team Leader manages an existing team of Navigators and Guides in the region, and leads the change management process as services and supports to youth and young adults in and from care continue to be transformed.

Reporting to the Director, the Team Leader provides leadership and support to staff through oversight of youth transition planning service delivery for youth, young adults, and families throughout the assigned region. They provide direction to a team of SPO 24 Navigators and SPO 21 Guides ensuring that practice meets required service levels, is youth led, trauma informed, culturally appropriate and guided by policy and procedures. Supervision is provided through various methods, both in person and virtually using technology to support service delivery. This position requires collaboration across ministries and with diverse partners to promote integrated planning services and connection to community for youth and young adults.

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Work or Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Child and Youth Care; or, a related degree in an identified human services field (Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Theology, Indigenous Studies, Education, or Nursing) OR
• Master's Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology/Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology OR
• A candidate may be considered equivalent to the above education requirements when they are registered and a member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or has a letter from the College confirming that their application for registration has been approved.
  • NOTE: All education credentials will be subject to verification as per the outlined ministry process. If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). You must provide a comprehensive report and the MCFD supplemental report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.
• Minimum 5 years’ combined experience that includes working with or supervising staff who are working with:
  • Vulnerable youth and young adults with complex needs, i.e., substance abuse, mental health, homelessness, or youth in or formerly from ministry care, AND
  • Youth or young adults with developmental disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and their families.
• 2 or more years of experience with person-centred, team-based planning.
• 2 or more years of experience working in a cross-sector team environment, with other ministries or organizations.
• 2 or more years of experience providing leadership or supervising teams.
• Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s licence with no restriction or equivalent (i.e., from another Canadian Province).
  

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

• Experience in a new program or change initiative, including the development of program or practice related to the change.
• Demonstrated experience leading or facilitating teams or groups in virtual environments and supporting service delivery with the use of technology.
• Experience engaging with Indigenous communities.
• Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous, Métis or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
