Job Summary

The Team:
Join the Business Risk Management Branch at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, a dynamic team dedicated to providing agricultural risk management services. We help farmers and farm organizations proactively manage uncertainty through a suite of programs, including AgriInsurance, AgriStability, AgriRisk, AgriInvest, AgriRecovery, and Agricultural Wildlife Damage Compensation. You will collaborate closely with the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, working together to support viable farming operations in mitigating severe financial losses due to weather perils and market conditions.

The Role:
As a Crop Risk Specialist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, you will work independently to analyze and implement agronomic practices for high-profile Production Insurance and risk management programs. Your expertise in agronomy and horticulture will guide the design, development, testing, and delivery of these programs, ensuring the Province of British Columbia meets its insurance commitments. This role is vital in adapting to new and revised federal and provincial initiatives, safeguarding the integrity of our agricultural risk management efforts.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master’s degree in agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and production parameters for commodities common to B.C. OR
  • Degree in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and production parameters for commodities common to B.C.; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in the discipline of agronomy or related to primary agriculture production.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience supervising staff (including performance management, direction of work, coaching etc.); OR
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience delivering agriculture risk management programs or delivering agriculture projects of moderate to high complexity, with multiple deliverables and with various and divergent stakeholder interests.

Provisos

  • A valid driver’s licence is required.
  • Field work is part of this role which may include travel to remote areas, overnight or extended stays and outdoor work in all weather conditions with the potential for wildlife overlap.
