The Team
The Research and Innovation team at BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), established in 2017, is a dynamic and impactful group focused on advancing wildfire science and technology. With four key streams-Health Research, Social Sciences, Innovation, and Fire Science-the team works closely with academia and drives innovation across the organization. The team’s work has a broad impact on BCWS operations, and its members are known for their expertise, supportiveness, and intelligence. As a Senior Officer, you'll help shape the Research and Innovation roadmap in a driven, passionate environment, contributing to meaningful initiatives alongside a talented, diverse team.
The Role
As the leader of the BCWS Research and Innovation team, you will guide research in staff health, social sciences, fire science, and innovation, overseeing projects that advance wildfire management. Your work will improve staff safety and contribute to technologies that benefit communities across British Columbia while shaping the future of research and academic partnerships.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in forestry, forest science, fire ecology or natural resource management or a related discipline and 7 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated experience in research and financial/economic analysis.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence or equivalent
Preference may be given to candidates with a combination of, or all, the following:
- Experience in negotiating agreements.
Provisos and Willingness Statements:
- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and/or overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.

About this Position:
This position can be based in any BC Wildfire Service office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
This is a temporary opportunity until May 30, 2025. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
