Your Opportunity
As part of BDO's Tax Service Line, you will assist clients with (SR&ED) tax credit claims by navigating the application process and ensuring our clients receive the maximum benefit under the program. You may be involved with other program funding opportunities as well, with the appropriate support.
As a Manager, you will be part of a dynamic professional services delivery team and work closely with clients’ financial and technical leaders. The ideal candidate for this role has a background in accounting and/or tax and is interested in pursuing a career as a client facing Manager with future growth opportunities within the practice.
Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) is a government funding program for R&D. You will be part of a national team of over 70 scientists, engineers and accountants.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively as a member of our professional services team
- Meet with clients’ senior financial & technical personnel to develop costing models for R&D projects
- Examine and analyze client operations and processes to determine which qualify for income tax incentives
- Perform and document calculations, prepare memos and/or other tasks required in the completion of claim working notes
- Prepare and/or review related tax schedules
- Liaise with Canada Revenue Agency and relevant provincial ministries to favourably resolve client issues
- Consult SR&ED court cases, views and CRA application policies to substantiate claim position
- Research client issues that arise from compliance or planning work
- Gain industry specific knowledge and build special skills to aid the client market
- Build your knowledge base on industry specific grant application & programs
- Complete additional ad hoc duties or assignments as required
- Act as Engagement Manager for files or lead the financial aspects of a file
- Participate in internal team meetings to help organize workflows for the SR&ED team

Your experience and education
- Advanced skills in MS Excel and data analysis tools
- Background in Finance, Accounting, Commerce or related disciplines
- Knowledgeable in current accounting principles
- Demonstrated client service excellence
- Comfortable dealing with client personnel at all levels of management
- Self-motivated, organized and proactive
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Outgoing, self-confident, and able to achieve individual and team objectives
- Positive approach, willingness to learn and multi-tasking abilities
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Advanced skills in MS Office environment (Word/PowerPoint/Outlook)
- You value teamwork, client service, and quality in detailed work
- Corporate tax knowledge would be an asset
- 2+ years' of experience with the Canadian SR&ED program is an asset and any experience with government assistance programs would be asset
- A CPA and/or In-depth tax courses are assets for this role
- Position requires periods of concentration working with data
- This role requires minimal travel to other offices and clients, however, could involve travel during peak busy periods as it relates to client projects and deadlines
- Must work well autonomously as a member of a national team
