Nursing is a self-regulated profession governed through the College. A nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with the standards of the profession, and for keeping current and competent throughout his/her nursing career (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009).

Qualifications:

- College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the Extended Class (NP-Primary Health Care or NP-Adult) required
- Baccalaureate In Nursing (BScN) required
- Masters Degree in Nursing (MScN or MN) required
- CNA Certification of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing preferred
- Current BLS certification required
- Current GPA or NVCI preferred

Skill, Ability and Experience:

- Minimum 5 years’ experience in mental health nursing preferred
- Effective interpersonal listening, time management, organizational, teamwork, leadership, problem solving and networking skills required
- Demonstrates interest and compassion with regard to mental health and addiction clients required
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills with clients and families required
- Basic proficiency in the use of computers required
- Demonstrated ability in program/service development including planning, implementation, evaluation, and promotion required
- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, and prioritization skills to assess and plan care for clients required
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team required

Principal Duties:

- To function as a Nurse Practitioner working in collaboration with other health care professionals to enhance the provision of quality care in Mental Health and Addiction Services settings
- Participates in a comprehensive assessment of clients including vital signs, weight, systems and functional review, cognition screening, vision and hearing assessments
- Assists with assessment, treatment, planning and coordination of client care.
- Consults with physician/psychiatrist when the client’s condition requires care beyond the Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice
- Maintains current knowledge of mental health nursing and interdisciplinary practice
- Act as a role model and provide leadership in clinical practice, education, research, and quality management.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to best meet the needs of both the client and their family
- Support and embrace the philosophy of Service Excellence and Patient and Family-Centred Care
- Participate in building a culture of safety and partnering with each other to improve the safety of client care processes and systems
- Interact with others in a way that advances the goals of the organization through co-operative working relation.
- Perform reflecting the Mission, Vision, Values and Code of Conduct of Bluewater Health
- Participates in unit/department and Hospital Quality Improvement initiatives
- Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
- Acts as a coach, mentor, resource and positive role model for new staff and students
- Other related duties as assigned
