THE ROLE

Since its inception, Hylands Golf Club has matured into a top-quality golf facility that offers a full range of services and amenities to its 1200 members and their guests. A true jewel among Canadian Forces golf facilities, Hylands continues to host numerous regional, national and international events. As part of CFMWS, our mandate is to provide affordable golf to our local military personnel and their families.

Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent, the Gardener is primarily responsible for the planting, growing and maintenance of all flowers, shrubs, small trees and clubhouse lawns on the property. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in selecting locations for ornamental planting and floral displays
  • Plan and organize the growth and use of plants for landscaping, ornamental use and various purposes.
  • Perform pruning techniques of ornamental trees and shrubs
  • Cultivate perennial and annual flowers and ground cover
  • Apply fertilizers to ornamental plantings and prepare biennial and perennial flowerbeds and plantings for winter dormancy
  • Operate equipment and hand tools associated with the maintenance of ornamental plants.
QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED

Education, Certifications and Licenses

College diploma or certificate in Horticulture or Landscaping, or related field AND some years experience in a related field

AND

A valid driver’s license

Experience

In floral displays and maintenance
In plant maintenance and cultivation
In applying policies, procedures, regulations, and applicable legislation

Knowledge

Of growth habits and proper cultivation of a wide selection of flowering bulbs
Of the proper use of fertilizers, soil conditioners, and herbicides
Of plant care
Of health and safety practices

Competencies, Skills and Abilities

Client focus, organizational knowledge, communication, innovation, teamwork and leadership.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

English or French essential, bilingual an asset

OTHER INFORMATION

This unionized position is open to all interested parties. Preference will be granted in accordance with the Collective Agreement for UFCW Local 175 bargaining unit at CFSG Ottawa-Gatineau.

The position is seasonal Full Time

The anticipated seasonal term of this position is April - November

Hours of work: 27 - 40 hours per week

Hourly rate: $18.87 - $23.92/hour

Location: Hylands Golf Club, 2101 Alert Road, Ottawa, ON
