 Job Summary

The Analyst System Safety is responsible for incorporating system safety principles into the design, integration, testing, operation and maintenance of railroad operational systems. The fundamental purpose of the role is to enable CN to demonstrate that safety assurance principles are incorporated into all activities through the lifecycle of a safety sensitive system. The incumbent understands the business goals, architecture and operation of a system and the related safety implications and is able to follow the processes, techniques and requirements needed to help ensure that CN systems are designed, operated and maintained with acceptable levels of safety.   

Main Responsibilities 

Safety System Engineering Analysis  

Apply System Safety Engineering analysis techniques to support project needs and set requirements for projects (e.g., Fault Trees, Hazard Analysis, Safety Cases, FMEA, BowTie analysis) 

Operational Safety 

Perform operational safety activities including categorizing, assessing or investigating safety events 

Interface with operational teams (both technical and in the field) and CN’s corporate Safety Management System activities to support daily decision making related to CN’s system safety needs 

System Overview  

Oversee the approach, scoping, definition, planning and delivery of the system safety engineering needs of a new system and program    

Working Conditions 

The role is performed in a standard office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.  

Requirements 

Experience 

System Safety Engineering 

Between 1 to 3 years of experience in system safety engineering techniques 

Experience in safety management systems and risk management techniques 

Experience in railroad operations, railroad suppliers or related businesses 

Education/Certification/Designation 

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science  

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering*   

*Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge 

Knowledge of Safety Engineering standards MIL-STD-882 and CENELEC EN5012X   

Knowledge of analysis techniques such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SHA) and CENELEC and MIL Standards for Risk Assessment and Safety Case definition 

Knowledge of reliability techniques such as Failure Mode, Effects and Critical Analysis (FMECA) and Failure More and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and associated standards 

Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS), Failure Reporting, analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) and risk management techniques 

Knowledge of European or Canadian Safety Management System (SMS) policy, procedures and framework as well as supporting techniques such as BowTie analysis 

Knowledge of project scoping, planning and fundamental project management techniques 

Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems and hardware and software design
