Description
The Bridge and Structures Carpenter is responsible for receiving daily direction from the Bridge and Structures Foreman or as designated by Bridges and Structures Supervisor. The incumbent is accountable for maintaining bridges, culverts, retaining walls and related structures.
Major Responsibilities Perform repairs to bridges, culverts, retaining walls and related structuresPerform concrete work including form erection, reinforcement installation, mixing and finishingPerform steel work including welding, fabricating, bolting, rivet busting, torch cutting and erectingPerform timber work including framing and fasteningPerform physical laborOperate hand and power tools as well as heavy equipmentRead and comprehend blueprintsEstimate material quantitiesMeasure, calculate angles and cut materialRespond to emergency calls Working Conditions The role requires shift work, including day, night, and weekend shifts when necessaryThe role is primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions as well as remote locationsThe role is required to be on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidencesThe role requires frequent travel which may include overnight stays out of town The role is required to work at heights and within confined spaces Requirements Must possess experience working with construction materials including concrete, steel, and timberMust possess experience handling and safely operating construction tools and materialsGeneral construction aptitude including working with and around power tools and heavy equipmentHigh School Diploma or equivalent Trade School or Apprenticeship Program*Must be able to identify risks and anticipate impacts to ensure a safe and secure environmentMust share timely information within and across functions to achieve effective workMust be able to make informed and timely decisionsMust be able to track metrics and be accountableMust be able to respond with agilityMust be able to deal with pressure and change by staying calm to quickly adapt to changesMust possess knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautionsMust have good hand-eye coordination, visual and auditory acuity*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
TrainingSuccessful candidates will take part in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB) with additional on-the-job training to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN’s safety standards. The training is primarily on health and safety rules as successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment as a Carpenter at CN.
