Job Summary 

The Officer, Fleet Engineering is responsible for overseeing a fleet of various vehicles which are highly specialized and railroad specific. The incumbent develops and maintains the vehicle specifications in order to provide internal customers with a vehicle that meets their requirements. The role acts as a Program Manager for a portion of the annual Vehicle Replacement Program. The position also provides technical support for the organization as well as external vendors. 

Main Responsibilities 

Program Management

Collaborate with Fleet Management Officers (FMOs) to identify and create the budget for the annual vehicle replacement program  Work with vendors to establish priorities and timelines  Review and approve supplier vehicle drawings, involving users as required  Handle vendor performance and compliance to timeline, budget, and specification, and take corrective actions as needed  Review and approve vehicle drawings and approve all changes (technical or commercial), and submit Purchase Orders (POs) change requests  Collaborate with vendors and FMOs to arrange vehicle delivery and user training  Handle any reworks or recalls  Liaise with Procurement and Supply Management (P&SM) on any commercial issues 

Technical Support  

Provide technical support to the FMOs, Vehicle Repair Authorization Centre, vendors and users  Work with vendors to resolve performance, reliability or safety issues  Approve all modifications to vehicles  Perform and lead failure analysis and corrective action if needed  Serve as an escalation point for FMO and Repair Authorization Center (RAC) for warranty claims  Go on site and audit vendors as required 

Vehicle Specifications

Develop and maintain vehicle specifications in order to provide the field with a vehicle that meets operational requirements, is cost effective, and meets regulatory requirements  Work with users to define and document requirements, including site visits and ride along to understand needs  Collaborate with suppliers and industry to understand new products, materials and technologies that can improve CN’s vehicles  Liaise with P&SM to issue the specifications to vendors for Request for Quotes (RFQs), answer questions, perform technical evaluation of the bids, and make recommendations on vendor selection  Conduct vehicle specification reviews as required 

Vehicle Technology and Telematics

Provide system support for vehicle telematics programs (e.g., training, support, special and specific reports)  Handle health of telematics devices  Explore new technologies to maximize vehicle Return on Investment (ROI) and safety  Perform or lead component and vehicle testing  Develop data analysis tools  

Working Conditions 

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires minimal travel (up to 20%) to visit sites within Canada and the United States (U.S.) 

Requirements 

Experience 

Engineering 

Between 3 to 5 years of experience in Engineering  Experience in utility type fleet vehicles*

Education/Certification/Designation 

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
