Chemical/Process Engineering Student – Mine Tailings

The Tailings facilities at Albian Sands are world class. This hands-on opportunity offers valuable process engineering experience supporting various groups in one of the world's largest Oil Sands operations. Get ready to dive into tailings processes like fluid transfer, over pressure protection, deposition, hydraulics, relief system calculations, and developing strategies to enhance operations in the field. This job experience will involve pilot development and execution, providing a fantastic learning opportunity!

  • Term length: 8, 12 or 16 months
  • Term start: May or September 2025
  • Job location: Fort McMurray, AB - Horizon Mine
  • Shift schedule: various

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support calculations on subjects like hydraulic calculations including slurry hydraulics, relief system calculations
  • Participate in developing and executing strategies to improve operations in the field and lab to treat tailings which may include pilot development and execution
  • Review and mark up process documents including Piping and Instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs) and Line Designation Tables (LDTs)
  • Support preparation of scopes of work to collect data on existing tailings processes
  • Apply engineering principles to assess, solve and design tailings solutions

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Currently enrolled in Bachelor Degree program in Chemical Engineering. Specializing in Process Engineering, is considered an asset
  • Interest in Tailings operations
  • Experience with general process simulators i.e., AFT Fathom hydraulic simulators for liquids & slurries, or equivalent
  • Familiarity or work with hydraulics of settling slurries and Bingham fluids
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license or equivalent out of province license with a reasonably clean driver abstract
