About this opportunity:

In support of the Developments Team mandate to “Identify and manage Atlantic Region's value creation programs & developments” there is a requirement for a Data Science Engineer to support our Digital Transformation initiatives across the Atlantic Region business unit. They will be responsible for progressing non-standard scopes that require new ways of thinking and an appetite to scrutinize new and underutilized data sets to drive data driven decision making. It is expected that with their technical expertise they will support the Atlantic Region, as well as other Business Units within Cenovus from time to time.

What you’ll do:

  • Align the data architecture and corresponding data repositories (database, data lake, data marts, historian, etc.) with the broader solution architecture (includes the business architecture, application/integration architecture, and analytics/reporting architecture) to correlate applications and their underlying data, facilitate data integration across domains, break down data silos, improve data quality and reliability, and reduce data redundancy

  • Develop data models with entities and relationships as required for data intelligence solutions

  • Define standards and design solutions for the acquisition and integration of raw structured and unstructured data from various systems and devices into a controlled data architecture

  • Design and develop visualizations and interactive dashboard solutions to enable data-driven analysis and decision making

  • Design and develop reporting solutions to support operational, analytical, performance management, and compliance requirements

  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to examine biases, patterns, ranges and distributions of data within very large datasets

  • Design, construct, evaluate and deploy supervised/unsupervised Machine Learning (ML) models for diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive use cases

  • Apply best practice techniques for model testing and turning to assess accuracy, fit, validity and robustness

  • Optimize and scale ML models for very large datasets using advanced techniques such as data partitioning, compression, etc. and cloud-based computing

  • Conduct domain analysis for use cases related to reservoir engineering, production engineering, production operations, and facility engineering

  • Develop hypotheses, test assumptions, and articulate findings to business domain experts to enable data-driven decision-making

  • Assist and advise business stakeholders with their data analysis requirements

Who you are:

  • BSc in Engineering/Computer Science, MSc and above is considered an asset

  • 2+ years of experience in the oil and gas industry

  • 2+ years of experience in data science and data engineering

  • Programming Languages: Python, R, SQL, .NET, VBA

  • Software Engineering: Jupyter Notebook, RStudio, VSCode, pip, conda, GitHub, Continuous Integration

  • Data Platform: Databricks, SQL Server/Oracle, Real-Time Data Historian

  • Data Analytics & Visualizations: Power BI, Spotfire, interactive web frameworks

  • Data Integration: REST API’s, ETL/ELT tools, data collectors, job schedulers

  • Deep knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, classification, decision trees, regression, neural networks, timeseries analysis and forecasting, etc.)

  • Experience in implementing applied mathematics and statistical techniques for data science

  • Experience using ML Libraries including Pandas, Scikit-learn, SciPy, Matplotlib, NumPy, Seaborn, etc.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure and service offerings, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure

  • Familiarity with Agile methods

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as presentation skills, enabling the conveyance of detailed information to various audiences.

  • A commitment to continuous learning and development, with the ability to multitask and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • The capability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with individuals from various disciplines. This includes working with external partners such as service providers, contractors and consultants to achieve goals and resolve issues.
