We are looking for a Senior Manager of Operations Practices to join our team! This is a fantastic opportunity to make a positive contribution and have an impact across all our Downstream Manufacturing sites. As the Senior Manager Operations Practices you will model, facilitate, discover, strategize, and prioritize the execution of Operations Practices with Downstream Manufacturing sites and Technical Services. Key deliverables are to standardize processes that implement:

  • Frontline and Mid-level Coaching and support.

  • Align Progress and results to impact of business performance.

  • Standardize the Operations Practices Team.

Work Environment:

  • The successful candidate may be located at any of the Cenovus Downstream Manufacturing sites or Calgary.

What you’ll do:

  • Accountable for setting the strategic direction for work and deploying resources to meet the objectives of the Operations Practices function(s) managed.

  • Adapt departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges; encourages continuous process improvement, prioritizes, organizes, and directs work of others while aligning to Cenovus goals.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of ongoing Process Improvement initiatives and delivery of technology automation initiatives involving a medium to elevated level of complexity.

  • Lead end-to-end multiple independent functional teams/programs (4), services and technologies within an Operations Excellence function. The Sr. Manager Operations Practices Team leads:

    • Process Performance; Procedure creation and enhancements

    • Training and Competency; Implementation and standardization

    • Field Coaching; Core leader activities, Leader Standard Work, LOD1

    • Connected Worker; integrated suite of frontline worker apps empowers operations, maintenance, and warehouse teams to boost productivity, enhance uptime, and grow profitability.

  • Leverage deep technical knowledge, ensuring the right technical methods and established standard processes are employed to drive efficiency and meet key performance indicator (KPI) objectives.

  • Identify and solve complex, operational, and organizational problems using the appropriate resources within and outside the department.

  • Align Downstream strategically and define vision and business goals (Journey Book) for the Operations Practices function(s) as it relates in support to help Downstream Sites deliver their critical initiatives, programs, and problem solving.

  • Achieve results through the work of others, as leading people is the increasing focus of the role as the levels progress. This may be through oversight of site large teams, or single teams accountable for bodies of expertise and advice including SME level consultants.

  • Lead Contractor utilization strategy: to enhance value during high need periods such as Program Launches, Capital Projects (CP), Turn Arounds (TAR) and Small Projects; contractors will be brought on and handled by Manager of OP

  • Responsible for performance evaluation and feedback, pay reviews and hire/exit decisions.

  • Optimize operational processes to enhance customer experience and service delivery, do it with site partners, not to them.

  • Responsible for and contribute to the documentation and management of all operational standards operating procedures (SOP); communicate and train sites on these SOP’s.

  • Collaborate with partners to consolidate, develop, and help implement relevant best practices, such as Leader Standard Work, LOD1 practices, Control of Work practices, alarm management, LOTO, safe operating envelops, etc., within each site. (Site consistent first then across assets)

  • Develop (standardize where practical), implementing, and maintaining common COIMS standards and practices and associated training content across Downstream facilities.

  • Interpret and advise in application of standards, procedures, OH&S and other local regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to assist in developing and implementing training and competency programs for safety critical roles in the field.

  • Support identification and implementation of performance improvement opportunities.

  • Collaborate with and influence regional management, Maintenance, Operations, and Process Safety groups to prioritize projects, operating targets, and other activities.

  • Align with individuals and teams across the program regardless of the firms they represent or the badge they wear with a view to creating one winning team across the various sites.

  • Build coach-coachee relationships by providing boots-on-the-ground individualized support by spending time doing observational coaching with Cenovus leaders, ensuring sustainability of Operations Practices and help each Leader find the best ways to improve the performance of themselves and their direct reports.

  • Lead performance metrically, tracking, monitoring, and communicating the progress of initiatives (able to show progress, results, and impact to the business)

  • Use data-driven insights to assess performance, identify operational efficiencies, and make informed decisions.

  • Work within DTS budgetary/financial objectives to implement financial plan and control resources.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher or equivalent work experience in management

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience preferably with frontline and middle management.

  • Knowledge of core refining, upgrader, and/or petrochemical operations fields

  • High proficiency with SharePoint, Microsoft capabilities and use of Power BI

  • Advanced ability to work on multiple projects and delivery schedules.

  • Leadership presence that allows you to influence and coach at all leader levels.

  • Courage to be wrong and willingness to help others win.
