In 2022, CAMH was announced as the lead for the coordination and administration of 9-8-8, the new national three-digit number for suicide prevention in Canada, that launched on November 30, 2023. 9-8-8 is Canada’s official three-digit national helpline for suicide prevention and emotional distress. This ground-breaking new service is available 24/7/365 and accessible to everyone from coast to coast to coast. CAMH is working closely with the federal government and key partners from different groups and communities, provinces, territories and building on our work on Talk Suicide Canada, to bring this high quality, evidence-based, equitable suicide prevention service to Canada.

The 9-8-8 National Hub plays a pivotal role in providing front-line service for the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline. The 9-8-8 National Hub provides 24/7 service via phone and text modalities.

We are currently seeking four (4) casual 9-8-8 Hub Supervisors to join the team. A 988 Hub Supervisor works on an as-needed basis within the clinical operations team of the 9-8-8 Hub and supports the 9-8-8 National Hub responders. As part of the supervision team, the casual supervisor is responsible for providing real-time support to responders and ensuring they provide the best possible support to service users in line with the 9-8-8 Suicide and Support Helpline.

Key Accountabilities

The successful candidate will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. Candidates must be available for a variety of shifts including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. Candidates must possess the ability to adapt to changing schedules and work on short notice. Casual Supervisor is required to have a dedicated, private workspace within their home, equipped with essential tools and resources to support responders adequately. A computer with secure internet access, a telephone headset or a hands-free device is required.

The successful candidate must possess a post secondary degree in a related field. Minimum of 2 year experience in a crisis/distress centre. The successful candidate must have experience as a responder in a crisis/distress centre. Must have sound knowledge of the principles and skills relating to crisis intervention and best practices in suicide prevention and the ability to remain calm under pressure, demonstrate empathy, flexibility, and adaptability in varying situations, and possess excellent listening and communication skills in both English and French. It is required that a successful candidate has a collaborative approach and the ability to work as a part of a team. You will have the ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds, teams and stakeholders and demonstrate high levels of sensitivity and diplomacy. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills, be reliable and flexible to work various shifts and adhere strictly to confidentiality policies as outlined by 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline and CAMH.
