The Chinook School Division is seeking a Speech Language Pathology Assistant to work on student contact days from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The Speech Language Pathology Assistant position assists students with speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive communication, or swallowing difficulties. They carry out treatment programs that are planned, directed, and supervised by speech-language pathologists.

Qualifications:

Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating ability to work as part of a team, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, school division staff and the general public.

Ability to conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to a school division and demonstrate strict attention to confidentiality of school division operations and information.

The required knowledge, skills and abilities are obtained through successful completion of a Speech Language Pathology Assistant diploma coupled with sufficient training and/or experience to provide assistance of occupational therapy programs as required in a school-based setting.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or the means and ability to travel extensively throughout the Province of Saskatchewan.

Knowledge of occupational therapy assistant strategies and interventions.

Knowledge of instructional accommodations and technology for promoting appropriate student motor skills.

Ability to collaborate and consult with other service delivery professionals to meet students’ needs.

Knowledge of and ability to effectively demonstrate adherence to the ethics and standards of professional practice in the delivery of school speech language services and the relevant laws and policies that govern professional practice.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, email, internet and related software and the ability to use the software effectively to perform various duties.

Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in daily routine.

Ability to adapt and support changes in the workplace due to changes in policies, legislation or school division needs.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision by demonstrating sound judgment, discretion and decision-making skills to ensure quality of work meets expected standards.

Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the division student services team.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Ability to communicate effectively in English and the ability to understand, develop, convey, and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion and tact in dealing with staff, members of the Board, and the public.

Ability to maintain current knowledge of office practices and techniques by engaging in lifelong learning.

Duties:

Conducting speech, hearing, and language screening as directed.

Leading language therapy activities in private or group settings

Creating therapy materials for patients to use in the classroom or at home

Cleaning treatment rooms and ensuring they are set up for the next patient

Keeping detailed records of patient's performance and progress

Scheduling appointments for patients with the speech-language pathologist

Answering phone calls or e-mails

Greeting students and parents when they arrive and preparing them for their appointment

Observing students during therapy sessions to note their responses

Assessing office inventory and ordering new supplies

Attending public education events with the speech-language pathologist as requested

Teaching patients how to use alternative communication technology

Supporting the SLP in developing programs and materials for specific students and situations.

Communicating with the SLP on a regular basis

Collaborating with the school team and other service providers to support educational programs/activities in the best interest of the student.

Working collaboratively with other disciplines on the Student Services Team to support comprehensive services to students.

Completing assigned tasks using effective problems solving and judgment, while performing within the limits of personal competence and the broad practice contexts.

Receiving periodic supervision from the SLP and integrating feedback into practice to ensure the service component is delivered in a safe, ethical, and effective way.

Meeting with other service providers to share information when appropriate and permissible to do so.

Reporting to the Speech Language Pathologist information regarding the caseload as required.

Applying ethics and standards of professional practice in the delivery of school occupational therapy services, observing relevant laws and policies that govern practice.
