About Kahnawà:ke Education CenterThe Kahnawà:ke Education Center is an administrative body responsible to deliver locally controlled elementary and secondary school programs and services for Kateri School, Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstahkhwa, and the Kahnawake Survival School. The KEC administers and supports postsecondary programs and their clients. The KEC is governed by the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) who are responsible to maintain and uphold all legislation, policies and procedures of the KEC.
Position SummaryThe main role of the guidance counselor is to provide support services in the form of social, academic, and career counselling to students on an individual or group basis. The guidance counsellor also supports Kahnawà:ke Survival School staff in ensuring student success.
Key Responsibilities
- To conduct an evaluation of student needs, including but not limited to personal, social, emotional, situational, behavioural, developmental and academic
- To decide on the best course of intervention in collaboration with stakeholders such as students, families, staff, and the student services team
- To develop and implement action/service plans for student success with stakeholders, including the student, family, teachers, student services team, and relevant outside organizations
- To provide support counselling to students and families in an individual or group setting, as required
- To conduct outreach to families
- To provide applicable local and non-local resources to students, parents, and staff
- To collaborate with applicable service providers to provide informative sessions on various topics, such as conflict resolution, social, emotional and developmental issues, healthy relationships/consent, drug and alcohol awareness, teen pregnancy, and safe sex
- Collaborate with student services team and teachers to determine individual student’s academic needs
- Setting academic goals with students
- Supporting teachers in implementing individual student’s action/service plans
- Liaising with student, parents, teachers, and student support team to ensure student success
Requirements
- Liaising with student, parents, teachers, and student support team to ensure student success
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counselling, Educational Phycology is an asset
- Member of the Order of Social Workers or the Order of Guidance Counsellors preferable.
- Minimum of 3 years’ counselling experience required.
- Experience collaborating with other community services (Kahnawà:ke Education Center, Tewatohnhi’saktha, Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services, Kateri Memorial Hospital Center, Social Development Unit, Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers, and others)
