Position:

Interpreter - (Temporary Opportunity)

Organizational Relationship:

Reports to the school Principal

Summary:

The Personal Service Interpreter is responsible for providing interpreting services for a classroom teacher who is deaf.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Effectively communicate all spoken messages and all signed messages to and from the teacher and students in the classroom. The Interpreter should not speak on behalf of the employee and should voice and sign all information between the teacher and the students.

2. Effectively communicate all messages to and from the students conveyed in the classroom.

3. Transmit a student's questions or replies to questions to the teacher in the language level used by the student.

4. Provide interpreting services for the employee during school functions outside the classroom during regularly schedules school hours as well as occasional evening for school functions.

5. Be available to provide interpreting services at workshops, staff meetings, education conferences and case meetings the classroom teacher is required to attend.

6. Accurately relay instructional information, including subtleties and nuances that speech conveys. Maintain confidentiality of information. As part of the educational team the interpreter will have access to confidential information related to students and the teacher.

7. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Diploma in Interpreter Training (Deaf/Blind)

2. Minimum of 3 years of training and 500 hours of practical clinical experience

3. Minimum 1 to 2 years experience in personal interpreting services

4. Must be fluent in American Sign Language, manually coded English and English

5. Knowledge of deafness and the inter-communications required to relay information

6. Manual dexterity and well-conditioned hands and arms to enable signing for extended periods of time

7. One Hand Manual Sign Language

8. Oral interpreting skills, excellent visual concentration and ability to sustain eye gaze to capture all information

9. Ability to capture subtle intentions in relaying messages

10. Excellent auditory memory to retain and interpret multiple sides of conversation and communication

Please note the following:

This is a 30 hour per week, temporary vacancy. This position follows the 10 month school calendar and is available immediately until June 27, 2025 and from September 2, 2025 until June 26, 2026.

Membership with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters required.
