DEPARTMENT:

Cytology


COMPENSATION:

As per Collective Agreement


WORKING SCHEDULE:

Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm

(37.5 hours per week)



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs technical duties related to the preparation of cytological specimens.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Sets up and operates laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations.
  • Operates, separates, numbers and arranges specimens for laboratory examination.
  • Maintain simple laboratory records and inventory for supplies and reagents.
  • Performs scheduled tests and measurements using a variety of manual and automated processes.
  • Ensures that Quality Control checks are run and reviewed when testing.
  • Participates in all internal and external quality control programs.
  • Performs routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of appropriate documents.
  • Follows all guidelines for handling of infectious materials.
  • Maintains accurate records for all test and control results.
  • Assists with the filing of cytology and histology slides
  • Required to observe all safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
  • Other duties as required.

SKILLED KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge

  • Graduate of a Laboratory Technician program or equivalent previous experience.
  • Medical terminology an asset.

Technical Skills

  • Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Social Processing Skills

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential.
  • Experience in work processing preferred.
  • Ability to instruct new employees in specimen processing specific to cytology.
  • Ability to work independently with in a group environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within a team environment.
