Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a temporary part-time Food Services Preparer at Bruderheim Elementary and Lamont Elementary. Supporting the Alberta Government School Nutrition Program for the 2024-25 school year.

Bruderheim School serves approximately 115 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with nine teaching staff and eight support staff. The school is located in Bruderheim, AB, approximately 48 kilometres north of Sherwood Park, AB. Bruderheim School is filled with responsible students and staff who strive to do their best in all things. Everyone in the school is encouraged to strive for excellence and focus on building character. To succeed and be able to develop a positive attitude of being unique, students need to feel secure. The school sets performance expectations for all parents, students and staff and sees community involvement as mutually beneficial and worthwhile for everyone.

Lamont Elementary serves approximately 330 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with 17 teaching staff and 13 support staff. The school is located in Lamont, AB, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Sherwood Park, AB. Lamont Elementary is located in a community that strongly supports and appreciates the value of education. The school offers an outstanding academic program, including a range of opportunities for students to participate in fine arts programming. Opportunities also include a variety of extracurricular activities including a strong intramural program, sports teams and numerous clubs. The school’s mission is to provide the best possible quality instruction to students and to support the values of the community it serves. Lamont Elementary is also a designated Play And Learn at School (PALS) pre-kindergarten site within the Division.

Commencing October 28, 2024 and ending June 25, 2025

12 hours per week ( Tuesday-Friday, 3 hours per day)

Key Duties/Responsibilities

A Food Services Preparer’s primary responsibility is to ensure that the operations of the hot food counter/cafeteria of the school are run in a positive and efficient manner. Their duties are under the supervision of the Principal/Assistant Principal.

Cook foods in the Self-Cooking Centre (heat/steam oven)

Prepare breakfast and lunch (hot food)

Prepare foods as required for the daily special (hot food)

Ensure food is prepared with quality control

Make sure that food is prepared according to health regulations

Monitor portions and wastage

Prepare sandwiches, salads and cold platters

Wash dishes and clean kitchen and cafeteria

Design and coordinate menus for weekly lunches

Order produce, meat, dairy products, groceries and kitchen supplies

Receive deliveries, organize supplies and rotate stock (inventory control)

Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and equipment

Perform monthly inventory for all goods

Operate cash register

Review profit/loss statement with Business Manager

Supervise cash intake

Make daily deposit to the general office

Invoice staff as required

Balance daily cash

Serve student and staff

Provide direction to student helpers

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School Diploma

Food Safety Course (can be completed upon hiring)

Minimum of two years related experience would be preferred

Equivalencies will be considered

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

Good oral and written communication skills

Good interpersonal skills

Good organizational skills

A good sense of humour

Knowledge of kitchen equipment

Good health and physical fitness

The ability to take direction and work independently

Flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination

Short order cooking skills

Food preparation knowledge in soups, sauces, desserts, bread and pastries

Ability to operate a self-cooking center

The Food Services Preparer makes decisions related to menu items and the inventory control. All other decisions are approved by administration. Must have own vehicle to transport food from Lamont Elementary to Bruderheim School.

Note: They may be required to routinely lift items weighting up to 10 kilograms. Lifting heavy boxes and cooking supplies. Some of the unpleasant aspects of the work environment are:

Contact with infectious diseases

Noise level

Standing on concrete floors

The Food Service Preparer works in the kitchen/store. Food Service Preparer may have the same holiday schedule as teachers, including a long summer break as well as winter and spring breaks. However, they work on a ten-month contract basis and therefore are not paid during the summer months.
